I really miss 'Amnesia: the dark descent' on the list. It basicly reinvented horror in videogames. It should at least have an honorable mention....

Kind of puzzled how Kirby's Epic Yarn made it instead of Donkey Kong Country Returns but w/e.

My personal GOTY would probably be Super Meat Boy.

Otherwise if I have to pick off this list then Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Can you guys guess what genre I love?

I was hoping for a more interesting list, with some indie titles on there. Instead, I got a recycled list of mainstream titles. You guys do know that it's alright to award indie games the title of Game of the Year right? Minecraft captured PC Gamer's pick, and has been nominated for 2 GDC awards. It's even a finalist now.

Heavy Rain and Kirby's Epic Yarn made me raise my eyebrows. But everything else pretty much is just on everyone elses "Game of the Year" nominee list.

If I'm going to go by the odds, I'll say RDR or Fallout New Vegas will get the award... JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

I'm actually a little confused as to why Bayonetta isn't on this list. The only major criticism I can come up with is the horrible QTE that shows up on the first two levels and then never again.

It's a baffling design choice, but not enough to knock it off a GOTY list.

[small]Okay, the story is preposterous and there's enough fanservice to kill a horse, but it's still awesome.[/small]
it IS awesome. The reason I think Bayonetta should be up there, ok I'm not perfectly versed on release dates, but after completing quite thoroughly DMC4, Dante's Inferno, and Castlevania, I think Bayonetta comes out strongly on top. No I haven't played GOW3, I have played the first 2 but I still won't comment on that at all.

But in terms of the games mentioned that I did play, I believe Bayonetta was the strongest contender, and hell I'm not talking about story at all (in that case Dante's Inferno should win), merely the control, combat system, and not too frustrating platforming sections make it a winner. The challenge is in all the right places, the combat and timing, not stupid jumping around and shit. The graphics are beautiful, high-impact without being headache inducing and busy (i.e:Blops cutscenes, McRae Dirt menus) and the enemy designs are pretty awesome on a biblical proportion.

And understanding the physics of the different weapons makes the game and comboing all the more interesting, and an incentive in replaying on harder modes, in different endlessly different playing styles.

This list seems bloated by money... Cataclysm as a best of 2010? It was only out for 24 days of 2010.

No Gran Turismo 5? No God of War 3? No Final Fantasy 13? No Black Ops? And Halo REACH gets on there... thats reaching for something.

While the games on the list where adequate I would have thought there are games more worthy of the title, but hey.

However I am curious as to where is minecraft? Was it excluded due to just coming into beta?
Even in beta/alpha it surpassed every game in the list (Well maybe not the WII games and WOW as I havn't played those I cant comment)..

Re. Fallout3 and Bethesda..
"(...) but a pitch-perfect rejuvenation of one of gaming's most memorable worlds was more than many could have hoped for. And yet, it was exactly what we got."

..I suppose something like.. "exactly what some of us got".. probably would be all right.

It was excluded because if you didn't notice that list takes a huge dump on any non-AAA non-sequel. There should be a giant banner in front of it stating "this ad space bought by EA/Activizard/nintendo" Every game on the list was a AAA Sequel. Each and every one, its pathetic.
Agreed and worse many of the games were not even good sequels per se.

To them, I say: No. Saying that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is "just more Super Mario Galaxy" is like saying that the Mona Lisa was "just another drawing by Da Vinci." Everything that was introduced in the first Galaxy - the colorful, creative worlds; the mind-bending and gravity-warping level design - is honed to near perfection in Galaxy 2.
So basically more of the same, only "better drawn". :p

Any game that can still provide that feeling of adventure and discovery in a 6 year old engine deserves to be Game of the Year.
I'm sure the new content and complete redesign helped a little, too. :p

[Fallout: New Vegas] has been plagued with waves of bugs, making it a controversial nominee for our Game of the Year
Wow, you said it. Obviously it won't win (right? right?) but I'm amazed you'd even nominate it. I've not played it, but I've heard lots of things about it. Correction: I've heard the same thing about it said lots of times, which is that it's buggy as hell! IMHO, having such a game on your nominees list is quite disgraceful.

The game has bugs, true. But it's not a lesser (and better that F3 in every way) game because of them.

I felt that out of that list, all of them were bland sequels (except heavy rain). I would only consider Red Dead Redemption or Mass Effect 2. I'm not sure how Guitar Hero 3, the WOW expansion pack, Reach, MG2, or Kirby's epic Yawn got into the list, Civilization 5, as they were slight advancements over their previous edition. I haven't played Star Craft 2 but I heard it was sort of disappointing (correct me if i'm wrong). I heard New Vegas was riddled with glitches. Heavy Rain had a plot with many holes. They're all good games, but GOTY shouldn't go to a generic game. Redemption and ME 2 atleast expanded on a story and tried new stuff out.
