What are some good RPGs that don't involve orcs and/or aliens? It seems that 99% of RPGs fall into those 2 categories (and probably a good chunk of all games, period). Surely the industry is more creative than that!

Fallout comes to mind...but what else?

Jade Empire also was refreshing...although it was basically fantasy with an asian twist. Same for Titan's Quest.

Are there any RPGs based in urban settings, for example?

Uh, Fallout is sci-fi. Jade Empire and Titan's Quest are fantasy. They're just not normal examples of their genres.

I actually can't think of any.

The World Ends With You takes place in an urban setting. The Shadow Hearts games take place between 1913 and 1929... they sort of follow actual historical events (but with a very fantasy-esque twist, so meh). And um... um... eh, I can't think of anything else.

EDIT: Oh, also, Harvest Moon.

EDITAGAIN: Oh, also, that Penny Arcade game with the long title.

not really, no. sorry dude, but in this day-and-age of rpgs, it's either ridiculous technology or magic. often both.
although, i guess that gta san andreas may count, i haven't played the latest in the series.

Do you mean RPGs in the context of electronic gaming? Because your choices get pretty slim there.

Bloodlines (The Vampire: The Masquerade game) springs to mind immediately as a gritty, primarily urban RPG. A damn good one, too, if you patch it up.

Planescape: Torment was technically fantasy, but not the likes of which you have seen. Nary an orc nor elf, and a damn good distance from any high fantasy cliche in setting or plot.

I guess you could count Hellgate: London. But I didn't enjoy it very much, at all, and calling it an RPG is... Well, it was less of an RPG than even Diablo.

Arcanum was fantasy, to an extent, but with a classy steampunk spin on it and plenty of inner-city intrigue.

If you have the patience to find it and the patience for rather boring combat, Septerra Core's setting is pretty unique. For a Western RPG.

Oh, and Fallout had aliens. Just FYI.

Technically no orcs in the Diablo games.

As for Urban rpgs the only one that really comes to mind is the MMO City of Heroes/Villains, which contains both orcs and aliens.

Wait. I got one.
Harvest Moon. Technically an RPG.

Well, there's GTA IV. It's not marketed as an RPG, but it has pretty much all of the elements there apart from an XP bar.

Aaaaand if you don't mind its age, Shadowrun on the SNES might be exactly what you're looking for.

There are a couple of questions you need to answer a little more fully before this question can be fully answered.

First: What do you mean by RPG? In the 8 / 16 bit era these were games that had a distinct focus on driving a character through a story, the "reward" for playing the game was that your character would move forward through the events of their adventure. Usually this would be paired with Random encounters and coming from Japan.

But in the modern era everything has character development and story wedged into it (not always a good thing), as well as enough mechanics that are similar to leveling up your character (whether it is getting better weapons and armor, learning new skills and magivc, or actually leveling up) So you have to be clear.

Second: what is "Sci-Fi" or "Fantasy" Shadow Hearts is set in the late 1800's but there is enough spirit magic, vampire-esque tomfoolery to fool anybody in a medieval chain mail recreation. And Bioshock is set somewhere around the forties or fifties but that is science fiction (yes yes yes steam punk science fiction).

Right now I am playing Hotel Dusk on the DS, much more a gritty Pulp Fiction Detective Story with not a single sci-fi or fantasy element in it. Really deep and interesting story and it plays very well. But more of an adventure game than an RPG per-se. I think, if game development is in your future, you might haver stumbled on a potential market there.

What is the deal with this obsession with pirates, fantasy, spaceships, and ninjas anyways? While I admit that ninjas are pretty cool, the problem I have with medieval content with orcs and goblins and wizards is they never really discuss the realities that they did not have toothpaste substituting dental care for chamber pots... a toilet you cannot flush in your bedroom... awesome. Pirates = scurvy, the romantic imagery is somewhat diluted when I consider finger nails falling out, and sci-fi's borderless rules make it so hit and miss that I don't understand why people don't call it out more often.

Yea Shadow Hearts definitely not. Doesn't get a lot more fantasy than a guy who turns into demon-creatures.

The problem with role-playing games that happen in real-life modern times is that you are pretty much just rping your regular life. The turn-based doing-your-hw mission just isn't the sign of the times.

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, as for an RPG that's based in reality instead of fantasy, I don't think a single one has been made. I imagine though, it would be like, "You defeated cop, group gains 34 experience points, go to jail, game over"

The problem with trying to find a non-fantasy non-scifi rpg is that it is impractical to make one. Anything made that is supposed to be modern day or close is either an RTS or a shooter.

Thats because we have guns and tanks and the like. We just don't do things turn basedly. The reason we make exceptions for gun combat in fantasy/sci fi rpgs is because the setting is ridiculous, we can overlook some oddities of waiting your turn to shoot or stab someone, then gain some xp and random loot for it.

Well, there's the Geneforge series from Spiderweb. It's fantasy with magic and whatnot, but it has a strong eugenics bent.

I suppose that new Vegas game would be something along those lines, then again, it's more of an Urban Simulator like the GTA series...

I guess those cheesy J-RPGs...ya know, the ones where they put you in the role of a high school student and you have to deal with social issues, raise certain stat points to woo virtual girlfriends and make key decisions like going to the school weight room or going out to a local club... those might count.

Well, I think Alpha Protocol would fit the bill. Sadly though, it's not out yet.

lol, do you get missions in games like that? Sounds like the sims, only you are playing 1 person.

Sims. GTA.
