Nose bleeds, why?

Along side chewing my own gum I feel that surprise nose bleeds are the most bizarre and random thing that happens to my body.

My question is, why do we get nosebleeds (other than when you receive a blow to the nose/face)? And adding to this, how often do you get them?

This is my second nosebleed in 3 days and I've just been sitting at the pc!

OT: Only with frivolous cocaine use or sometimes during allergy season. In both instances I rub the inside of my nose alot.

Sometimes I've seen people get nose bleeds from altitude change. Even just a floor or two of a building would do it at times.

Or your brain has exploded.

Grabbing breast by mistake and extreme embarrassment in front of the opposite sex does not cause bloody discharge from the nose. If that were true, I'd have died of blood loss years ago.

This is freaky because I've been getting nosebleeds a lot recently too... SORCERERR!!!

OT: I think it happens when dryness of the nose causes cracks/cuts, and then the blood clots up and keeps on a squirting.

Seasons are changing, when it gets a little drier, nose bleeds can happen.

I once knew a guy who would get a nose bleed if it was either too hot out or if he argued too hard (neither needed to be very extreme, like 80 degrees would cause it or raising his voice even slightly)

we had quite a few cocaine based jokes at his expense hehe

I happen to have very dry skin (especially during the winter), so I have nosebleeds more often then I would like.

I used to get them all the freaking time. Eventually, they got so bad that they'd last about 20 minutes or so at a time, and it was just gushing blood. It was bad. So I just got my nose cauterized. For the most part, I've been just fine since then.

I mostly get them in spring, because of my allergy. It dires my nostrils and so they tend to rupture a bit when i sneeze.

Last time I had a nose bleed was when I was in 1st grade. I got it because I picked my nose to much. True story.

Get a large bottle of Vaseline, clip & file down your pinky nail, insert pinky into Vaseline, insert pinky into nose....every hour...for the rest of your life...& you'll never have another nose bleed again.

If you live in the desert & have a dry nose & it bleeds alot,, you may have a inherited defect or may have somehow destroyed the mucous membranes lining your nostrils....or both....

You see in your nasal cavity, and with most of your mucus cavities, the walls are FILLED with blood vessels. Not only are these vessels small and numerous, they are thin and fragile. Some people are more susceptible to nosebleeds because these vessels are closer to the surface, where they are more affected by the external environment. Both cold and heat zap moisture from skin and superficial vessels, and that leads to a crack in the skin, a rupture in vessel, and some guy running to get a tissue.
