So i was listening to video game soundtracks and stumbled across one from an old GBA game i loved as a kid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7pBcKlONnA

Not only did the music bring a tear to my eye, but i was inspired to dig out my old Golden sun cartridge and fire it up for some sweet, mediocre copy-pasted RPGing. Turns out, the game wasn't as amazing as my innocent kid self thought it was. So tell me, escapists, when has nostalgia last dissapointed you in a game?

Nostalgia isn't the problem. The problem is that new games keep getting better and the games we grew up with stay the same.

But OP... Star Fox 64
*sobs!*

I used to love River City Ransom for NES. LOVED IT. But I bought it on the virtual console, and its repetitiveness is killing me. Buying food is still as fun as I remembered it.

Well, the games we played as kids can look relatively awesome because we are innocent and inexperienced with videogaming.

Yeah, but the barrel roll hasn't aged very well.
"Shut up, Peppy!!!"

But I still think Sonic the Hedgehog and Doom are the shit to this day. So I suppose nostaglia wins.. This round!

Ah yes, Doom is awesome and sonic is as well, but to a lesser extent. There certainly are great old games, but i was never rich enough to afford a real console till the wii, so i only played the good PC ones, like Diablo 2.

I tried a Project 64 rom of that game, it was keyboard rape horrible. Of course, playing it on a real console does change the experience somewhat...

innocent? i understand what it means to be inexperienced in terms of gaming, but what do you mean by innocent? ppl keep saying that but i dont even see what that means.
i suppose all the improvements to games has desensitized us a little bit, so we come to generally expect more out of a gaming session than what an old game can deliver to us, probably all due to the inferior technological environment of older games, its just not as stimulating. especially when nostalgia inflates our expectation of the repeatability of the joy we got when we first played some game. ponies

It's pretty much just another way of saying inexperienced. We have no other game playthroughs to compare to the ones we played, so we just thought it as the best there was.

The sad part was, I didn't even finish Super Mario Bros 3.
Neither did I. I just played it on a flash website, but it was still console quality. probably my favorite of the mario series besides Galaxies.

Age of Empires II. I literally grew up on that game, quite possibly spent collective months playing it, and it is an inseparable part of my childhood consciousness as Star Wars and the various Nicktoons. But after having not played it for years and exposed to things like Homeworld, Total War, and Dawn of War since then, it's... underwhelming to say the least. I still have the memories, but the experience is gone.

I recently dusted of my NES and sat down for some quality nostalgia time... turns out every game I used to love back when I was a kid is simply driving me insane now. I just don't have the patience for the old school kind of trial and error (and this is coming from a guy who liked Mirror's Edge) and constant starting all over again because of "WHAT THE HELL, limited continues?!"
Even Super Mario Bros was annoying.

With the nostalgia glasses on I still think "Gunstar Heroes" and "Streets of Rage II" for the Genesis/Mega Drive hold up to this day though.
