Neither am I!

It seems everyone and their brother on this forum likes anime, so here is a little piece of forum space for those Escapists that don't indulge in simply animated and often poorly told Japanese cartoons and comics.

Why don't you like them? What do you watch on TV and read?

For me, if I ever watch TV, I usually watch History, Discovery, NatGeo, or the Military Channel. I read enough for college, so reading in my free time is not on my fun list much, unless its funny (F U Penguin, Silly Puddy and Napalm). I have found Bleach is pretty cool, but I just don't care enough to follow it.

i don't care for it either, but my girlfriend loves it and can talk about it for hours. which makes me dislike it even more.

I don't care for anime for three simple reasons. It's because:

A) i don't care for "dramatic" productions in general, and there's not much of comedic anime.
B) anime as a whole is clogged up with cliches a bit too much for my liking.
C) i don't have any super-powerful attraction to japanese pop-culture.

The only animes I ever watched fully were Bleach, Death Note, and Naruto. I was interested in watching more but I eventually stopped caring because A) It was a pain in the ass to find a website that showed properly subbed new episodes and B) Not trying to troll but a lot of the nature of animes quickly became yucky and repulsive to me *looks at School Days*, kinda like how most people are repulsed by JRPGs.

I don't see how anime and gaming are related. Enlighten me.

I don't like anime because....well....I just never liked any of it that I saw. I had a roommate in college who was into it, and I tried to get into Gundam and a few others. It just never clicked. The visuals were mediocre, the stories was lame, the voice acting was crap (even watching original Japanese versions with subtitles). I just found nothing to like. To each his own I guess.

It's not really true that most people will like Anime just because they're a gamer. I'm not saying that because I don't particularly like Anime, because it is a respectable form of entertainment (at least when we're not seeing panty shots of underage girls).. but I just don't see the connection between videogame fan and anime fan unless of course you're into RPGs but even then that doesn't mean too much.

I enjoy anime and manga...

I dont like shounen crap though... i like the grittier stuff. Seriously the Berserk anime ended and i was like WTF is the shit... has to more... and then i read my first manga... Thats how it happened.

However, i dont like alot of aspects about them... first, i never know who im supposed to find attractive... they all look like chicks with various sizes of breast... and its at the point if they are huge and very obvious i almost have to assume they are dudes...

Second... most of the popular ones suffer from a DBZ syndrome known as i have unlimited power... will at least ill have more power once i beat up the guy who could destroy the universe with a fart. And then his cousin or other who is twice as powerful comes along and then i'll get more powerful than that...

That pisses me...

Thirdly... lots of them are kind of depressing, and make me feel dirty.

Then... why the hell are they always like 15 years old... come on seriously? How gay is that. Do people ever leave highschool in Japan? WTF are all manga/anime writers that depressed about thier miserable highschool experience so they constantly have to revisit it and this time they get to bang the hot girl or girls?

Thats also depressing.

Why do i like that stuff again? Oh yeah... berserk.

And Bleach gets very lame very quickly... see DBZ syndrome.

EDIT: Oh and the connection between anime and games might have to do with it all being summed up in japanese culutre as Otaku... so its like nerds will be nerds right?

I used to like some animes, bleach death note and even naruote, but the comdey ones are just weird, not funny, just weird. I eventualy grew out of them as the cliches grew to ridiculous amounts. Also my brother is obsessed with anime, which is another reason I don't like it.

Well, I can't exactly say I am an Anime fan, but I'll put this in a different view-point.

I've always liked cartoons...animation is one of the few mediums storytellers can use to have things happen that you just can't do in the real world. And, frankly, 3D movies and animation is very high-end on anyone's budget.

If I enjoy watching something, I could care less whether it's Anime, real world, or what-have-you. It just so happens that some of my favorite shows are Anime, since, in my experience, the Japanese have a lot more imagination when it comes to a (cartoon) story plot than American directors; yes, some of them are quite...dumb, others so convoluted that it's difficult to follow, and most tend to make you go "Uh...ooookay." They also tend to have a sense of humor that's enough to make me laugh.

I understand some people don't like it, and I suppose that's just your thing. Myself? ...I've got some more Azumanga Daioh to watch, laugh at, and facepalm to. B'bye. :D

I'm curious. What would you consider well animated and well told?
The movie A Scanner Darkly (watching right now).
I might if I had it, it was ok.
I bought it on the XBL marketplace. I'm studying 3-D animation and were talking about Rotoscoping, so I thought I'd pick it up. Plus I've never seen it, but always wanted to.

That at least makes sense if you live in Japan, but what about other countries?? Still want a better explanation on that. "Games based off Animes" does not count. Just because a game uses cell shaded graphics and puts an anime title on the box does not constitute a connection between gaming and anime.

Well yea, i think you miss my sentiment in there.

What i mean is for the mainstream, even among gamers, its just assumed that all of us like geeky and nerdy things... comics, starwars/trek whatever you are, and boobs (and yes this is valid ladies because gamers are still largely assumed to be male even if it isnt true. thats just the way it is at this point.)... its just a generalization that may have no bearing on the gaming community at large.

Its just easier when you can profile people in such a way.
