I finished Mass Effect 3's single player campaign last night and I think I must have missed something.

This will obviously contain spoilers so stop now if you don't want it ruined.

What I'm confused about is just about everything that happens after you decide to attack the Illusive Man's Base.

When and how did the Citadal travel to the Sol System?
When and how did everyone on the Citadel get killed?
If the reapers made the citadel...um, what was it for? Cause it did nothing except open like a flower and get them killed...so why did they bring it to Earth?
Where was the Crucible being constructed this whole time?

I'll just address these two -

If you haven't, play ME1, or at least read a summary of the main story. Will tell you what it was initially used for.

As to why they brought it to Earth, I thought that was actually explained pretty well in-game (both by The Illusive Man, Anderson (or Hackett, can't remember which right now) and what you see when you get beamed up).

They said in Mass Effect 1 that the Citadel is a direct conduit to where the Reapers have been sleeping?

So that was never explored? Along with the Reaper known as "Harbinger"

The Citadel and Mass Relays were created so that organic species would develop along the paths that the Reapers wanted. This made the evolution of each civilization more predictable, which made harvesting easier for the Reapers.

About the Crucible construction site, some backwater system known only to Hackett I think.

Don't remember if it was ever specified, but it was supposed to be kept in relative secrecy.
