Not impressed with Xbox One

Hey guys,

I've had a PS4 since launch, and decided the other day to get an Xbox One to go with it. I should start by saying I'm not a Sony fan boy at all, last generation I was virtually completely Xbox 360, and was looking forward to playing on the Xbox One.

Three massive problems I've noticed:

Install times. I had to wait around 6 hours to install Dead Rising 3. I started it yesterday evening to give it a try, and couldn't play it at all all evening. This is on a 120mbps internet connection. I'm really disappointed by this, especially under the knowledge that when I need to uninstall it to free up hard disk space, I will have to repeat this installation to play it again next time. No more can I just feel like playing a game, put it in and play. I now have to plan hours ahead what I want to play.

Store browsing. There seems (unless I'm missing something?) to be no way to browse the store. Say I want to view all the Sports games for example, there seems to be no way of doing so, just top rated lists etc (not even alphabetical listings). Finding the list of "Gold games" seems to be virtually impossible as well, I managed to stumble across it once by chance, no idea how to get back to it.

Crashing. I finally got Dead Rising 3 installed and got into playing it this morning. Within an hour the game crashed losing about 30 minutes of progress. I turned the Xbox One off and went back to my PC.

Now, I must reiterate, I'm not a Sony fan boy. But I've not had a single crash on the PS4, the install times are barely noticeable, and the store is way more comprehensive.

Have Microsoft really dropped the ball this generation? I was looking forward to exclusives, but really disappointed since I bought it. Then add on the fact that I had to pay £20 for a rechargeable battery, £20 to use my headset...

When people talk about install times do they mean straight from the disc or actually downloading the whole thing? Cause 6 hours sounds like way too much for installing from a disc. I don't think I ever took more than a few minutes on the PS3.

It's both I think, it downloads and installs. I know DR3 has a 16gb patch, so I'm guessing that was the crippling factor, but still my internet speed is fast enough to download that in no time. I don't know if the patch server is incredibly slow or what, maybe it was just bad luck, but hardly good first impressions.

I have crashes many times in my ps4. However it was not the fault of sony, but of the game ( warframe, ff14 both being online only games i get it).

The install times are long also, depends on the game and what you are installing .

I haven't touched a xbone ( and i won't ), but they do seem about the same . I would assume your DR3 problem is with the game and no the console. Also i wouldn't excatly blame install times on microsoft either.

Wouldn't it be the fault of the game? I'm just guessing, because I've had no problem with my Xbox One or Dead Rising 3 for that matter.

As for dropping the ball: If this is considered dropping the ball, fuck knows what the Red Ring of Death was meant to be.

Is one able to plug a USB hard drive into an Xbox One console, and transfer games between the USB hard drive and the console's built-in storage? If so, that's a possible solution to your game installation/uninstallation issue.

I think you might be able to after a recent patch, so yeah that might be a good solution. I have a spare 1tb hard disk as well, so I might try it out. Hopefully you can transfer between. Seems more like a workaround to a problem that possibly shouldn't exist though...

Possibly, I don't know. This is more a first impression remark than anything, first game I've tried, and it crashed within an hour. Maybe I'm just incredibly unlucky, who knows. That's kind of why I made this topic, to see if anyone else has comments about it.

Yeah, I think you've either bought a dodgy copy of the game or just had terrible luck. I've downloaded DR3 (digital copy) and played a lot of it and not only has it not crashed once but it downloaded fine too took sub 2 hours and my download speed is rubbish, from disk games are much quicker haven't timed it though.

As far as the UI goes. It isn't the clearest, okay once you get use to it and a lot faster than either the PS3 or 360...not played PS4 so don't know how it stacks up in comparison there.

Not the greatest console yet but it's already improved in a number of ways and has a fairly solid lineup for where it's at in its life cycle.

I suggest giving it another shot or make sure you still have the receipt.

Oh, I'm going to keep it. I want the exclusives if nothing else. It just seems like a bit of a let down, which is a shame.

Dodgy copy of the game is conceivable, I did get it second hand after all. I think I might go for mostly digital in future, since it uses the same HD space anyway and doesn't require a disk.

To be fair though, the Xbox 360 wasn't great when they first released it (the blade UI), hopefully they'll improve it in time.

The PS4 is also a huge letdown; no MP3 support (thus no custom soundtracks), no DLNA support, you can't play video off the HD at all (you can't even download game trailers from the PS Store), need PS+ for online (even though I already got it for the free games), and a bunch more (little things like no themes or PSN comments). I got a PS4 for the games first and foremost but I think the PS4 is the 1st PlayStation with less features than the previous one. The one thing I was really looking forward to for "next-gen" was custom soundtracks for all games on PS4. I have no interest in the Xbone just because I don't care about Microsoft's exclusives. Both current-gen consoles are huge letdowns.

True, I should state that I wasn't trying to say the ps4 is without it's flaws. To be honest, I find both to be let downs compared to the last generation. Ps4 lacks a lot of multimedia support (3d bluray as well) that were included in the ps3.

WOW!! o_O

I have a WiiU, bought Splinter Cell and DeusEx from the Eshop, both between 15GB adn 17GB files and on that "crap, none-nextgen" console and a 100mb connection, which was similary DL:ing a Xbox360 game and my friends laptop streaming a live football event it still took only like 3 hours :/

Sad to hear your XboxOne had this bad a first impression.
I bet someone here has better experiences but those 3 flaws are pretty big ones.
Hope it gets better, sounds like it can't get worse...

Have you told Sony (via Twitter or whatever) that you would like these features included? I see no obvious reason why a software update to the console could not allow such things. The PS4 also doesn't play CDs, but it has hardware that is capable of so doing. If enough people share your wish to support the features you mentioned above, Sony might consider putting them in. After all, if these are features people want, then it will help them sell more consoles.

I may be wrong, but I think them opting out of it is a business decision rather than a practical one. They're trying to drive people towards signing up for Music Unlimited, and the easiest way to do that is to not let them play music via any other means. I doubt the high up guys that made this anti-consumerist decision will change their minds on it, unfortunately.

Never hurts to try. Look at what happened to the bad decisions MS had made for the Xbox.

It has already improved alot, with some of the latest patches and stuff, but yeah its definitely got to do some more growing. I got the One on Day One, and honestly used it to watch netflix and surf the net WAY more than play games, at first. I would say during that time, my 360 got 95% of my gaming time. Now, my One gets about 60% of my gaming time, but thats getting ready to drastically change this fall, as it has a TON of games coming out for it.... finally. But I have to say, like others have pointed out, that download time is very unusual. The most it has taken me has been 5 to 10 minutes, tops, for a game.

I also despise downloading every game to your hard drive... I am hoping something changes with that sometime soon. Also, the party system is much more difficult to get used to, but they are working on that with each patch, it seems. Truth be told, I think Sony forced their hand, because I really do not think the One was ready when it launched.

If Microsoft defended these decisions until they were losing in preorders to Sony so bad it was by a factor of multiple digits to one in some regions, what are the odds that Sony's going to feel the same pressure?

From a business point of view, you'll want to get as many people as you can to buy your product. In this case, it wouldn't be pressure, but rather greed (is that too strong a word?) that you'd use to persuade them. Now of course it would depend on whether those options people want can be implemented cheaply.
