This might sound crazy, but I think the entire Kingdom Hearts series is completely average, with the only possible examples being 358/2 Days, and maybe Chain of Memories. Which basically means I found Organization 13 to be a lot more compelling than the actual protagonists, in a nutshell. *Cough* On the other hand, maybe I'll at least rank it as 'very good' once I actually play Birth By Sleep.
I agree, Sora is a weak protagonist. Roxas, Namine, and the entire Organization are much more interesting characters seeing as how they are constantly struggling with the traditional definition of humanity. I loved 358/2 Days's story, but felt the gameplay was lacking. Conversely I loved Chain of Memories's gameplay, but I felt that the story needed more behind Namine's character.
I was ready to cry bloody murder at you both, but then you both are right about Sora vs. Organization XIII. I think that's the point, though - Sora is so full of light and cheerfulness that he doesn't experience anythings so drastic or horrible as, say, Roxas. He's naturally optimistic about everything, and never gives up. I mean, just compare his and Roxas' themes and it shows you a lot about their differences. I think Sora will be fleshed out a little more in the future, hopefully - though in Chain of Memories we did get to see a more angry and heart-breaking side to him, what with fighting with a pseudo version of his best friend, losing his dearest memories, yelling at Donald and Goofy when they contradicted him (whoah, that scared the hell out of me!) and making a really hard choice in the end.
I wouldn't go so far as to say the games are
average, though. They're my favourites out of all others.
OT: I'll give Alice: Madness Returns a mention. The game is fun and beautiful, but it doesn't break many boundaries.
