I usually prefer Geek myself, but Nerd is hardly a complete departure from the truth.
Very much this. I'm happy to be called a geek, and it's how I would refer to myself, but I've grown up with nerd as a derogatory term often accompanied by physical violence, so it's not my favourite term.

Well, I know the difference between Expertise and Hit rating, and I know Lord Soth could kick Alucard's and Drizzt's arse within in a second.

So yeah, I'm a nerd.

Supernerd! Is me.

Should probably clarify that... I currently have 14 transformers, 2 warhammer 40k armies, and a large pile of cthulhu rpg books and knights of the dinner table comics occupying most of the space on my desk.

Well, I feel that nerdness is something to take pride in, especially on a site like this. So if you can out-nerd someone on a site with lots of nerds, you are an awesome nerd.

That still won't get you laid though..
Not all nerds are socially inept losers.
Look at me! Not a sarcastic comment, pointing out that if I'm a nerd, nerds can be officially stripped of the viewpoints society has on us.
So, uh, I herd u leik Mudkipz?

I've been seeing this phrase and variations of it all over the Escapist lately. Whether commenting on an article or just discussing what books we're reading, there are always a few of us that want to preface our (usually not very nerdy at all, actually) opinions with an acknowledgment that we just might come off as nerds.

Frankly, I don't get it. This is The Escapist, people. By virtue of being here, we're pretty much assumed to be nerds.

So my question to all users is this: Do you, in fact, feel that you are not a nerd? If so, what about yourself leads you to this conclusion?
People who are hardcore nerds tend to either shun me a little or treat me as an oddity because I only have a semi-superficial understanding of computers and do a lot of stuff that nerds find a bit too "cool" for their taste such as play in bands, go on tour occasionally, run a record label, socialise with a lot of women etc.

On the other hand, people who are in the music scene or the social scenes where I hang out definitely feel like I'm nerdy, because I openly admit to liking computer games, wasting time on internet forums and have a fairly full understanding of nerd culture and memes. So I get shunned a bit there too. I guess I don't fit in anywhere but then that's fine, I'm quite comfortable with that.
I think if I met you I would love you. Regardless of gender or sexual orientation...just sayin'.
Goddamnit, all these guys falling in love with me is very annoying. Dont get me wrong - it's flattering and all, I appreciate the thought, I really do... but can't you people be female?

I'm split. There's a part of me that is nerdy, but on the other hand, I'm a hugely casual gamer, and regularly forgo all the typically 'nerdy' things in favour of sports, socialising etc, to the point where I usually go on my xbox less than once a week.

As a result, I find myself distanced from the mainstream nerd mindset, and sometimes don't have a clue what people are talking about on here.

Anyone care to give me guidance?

EDIT: This is pretty much me:

Then you'd be a guy in a wig. Potentially diverting, but not what I'm looking for.

I'm a half and halfer I would say. But I like being a nerd, I'm studying a degree in maths and I love it. I would happily talk about it to everyone at all times if anyone cared, I played WoW for years and know how to solve Rubik's cubes ;)

I tend to play less video games than I used to and I play guitar more often so I guess that's my non nerdy side. I like being a middle grounder
