Then I must be a sick sick individual. I can promise I'm nowhere near depressed and I wouldn't take on a girlfriend if you held me at gunpoint. I live in a 2 bedroom apt with a spectacular loft that's decorated how I want it. I am free to come and go and do whatever the hell I want whenever the hell I want. I have complete control over my finances. When I decided I wanted long term companionship I went and got a dog.

The most miserable people I know are in relationships/married. These are people that would cut off any one of their appendages to live like I do for a day or two. These poor bastards have the same soul sucking routine day in and day out and scrape by in a job they hate only to come home to a wife/girlfriend they'd like to submerge in water until the bubbles stop. A few are trapped by the threat of losing half their stuff while others are trapped by the threat of a hefty child support payment. Bottom line they are trapped.

Don't get me wrong I'm not living like a monk by any means. I have a handful of female friends and one in particular shares my point of view on the matter of commitment. Over the years we've established what you could call a mutually beneficial arrangement. That being said we are miles away from exchanging gifts on Valentines Day and our commitment to each other is taken on a night by night basis.

Relationships might be awesome for some people. Others though, like myself, shouldn't enter into one and expect to be happy. The bottom line is you need to know what kind of person you are. I value my freedom over every aspect of my life far too much to bring in another person. Some people are looking to share their lives. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
I like this take on it.
Besides, we're 7 billion people on earth. Pretty sure we don't need more.

I am perplexed at how everyone here is missing the big picture. Especially those that try to justify it with poorest and exceptionally self centered excuses.

(To all us nerds) Ever wonder why the world is full of utter ingrates and dips hits that constantly berate and insult your intelligence? Because smart people don't reproduce. Well off people don't reproduce. In fact the more affluent a society starts getting the less it starts to reproduce. We at the US are hovering at 2.1 Birthrate. You need a 2.1 birthrate to sustain a society. a 2.0 birthrate means your society is replacing itself, anywhere lower and you are losing more people than gaining in the long spread of things.

Europen numbers are even lower. And if you want to get even deeper, let's not bring up Iran's birth rate numbers (0.7 somewhat recently) which partially influences a growing discontent amongst the population.

Native Europeans are at this rate slowly going extinct while refugees, immigrants, and other people from third world nations flock for shelter there. Their culture and customs permit and frequently encourage multiple kids, and they are replacing the former population.

The reality in Japan is that it is going to have a small number of able bodied workers, and producers supporting half the population in terms of pensions, healthcare costs, etc. And with a growing life-span, and more and more expensive medical procedures, you bet it's worrying the cash strapped governments there.

Global population fears as someone above mentioned. "Besides we're 7 billion people on earth. Pretty sure we don't need more." is so over simplified and assumes so many things. If you are going to talk big picture, and engross the entire human population into a massive number to justify the fact that you shouldn't reproduce in a highly affluent and wealthy society at least be aware of the reality.

Half the world lives on less than $2.50 a day. 80% of the world less than $10. The vast majority of the human population lives in a world totally bereft of the technological, societal, and cultural necessities that we so thoroughly enjoy. Wonder why the population is so disproportionate there? Because their birth-mortality rates are also higher. In many parts of the world Children are often viewed as a source for a helping hand with the family trade. So you got to have more children, whether religious or cultural grounds, even just plain and simple reality of your environment.

So to say "Oh well we shouldn't reproduce because there are 7 billion of us anyway" is kind of being highly disingenuous.

We live in an age where we can communicate and exchange ideas globally. We should take advantage of that.

For years I've wanted to go to Japan and just sleep around with any woman who would have me...if there were more guys like me Japans birth rate would likely explode. That would probably be horrible though since I know I wouldn't stick around long enough to see whatever offspring I produce.

OK then, to stop being horrible, I must be sick because I don't want a girlfriend. It's probably because I've already got one or, it could be because of my horrible, deviant mind.

This might just be the weirdest version of the apocalypse i have ever heard of.

But on a more seroius note, maybe the authorities shouldn't be telling people how to live theyr lives.

So what this piece is saying is... every single man should book a flight to Japan to bag some fine young thing (considering none of the apparently have boy friends).
That's what I'm getting from this.

I'll get us some plane tickets, you bring the beer.

[sub][sub]Not really, I'm engaged, but I likes to make the funnies[/sub][/sub]
That last bit reminded me of this for some reason:

Also, I have a woman as well... >.>
We can still enjoy the beer though, right?
I also... don't drink.

I AM SORRY I AM SO LAME D:
Well fuck this plan then.

I'll plan my own trip to Japan.

With Blackjack

And hookers.
forget the blackjack

Is it really a bad thing for birth rates to be going down? This planet is already ridiculously overpopulated so less people has got to be a good thing.
