If you don't want to go, I can't wholeheartedly recommend it. Just because I loved mine doesn't mean you'll necessarily like your's.

I guess that since I mostly stuck to my small group of good friends, I had fun. Took pictures with lots of friends, had a "meh" dinner, "danced" to music I hate. I guess the main reason I look back on it so fondly is because I started dating my now ex there at the after-party.

Besides, if they played the music I like and danced appropriately, it'd be a giant mosh pit. Which actually sounds like it'd be hilarious. Just imagine everyone moshing in poofy dresses and tuxes. Damn, that'd be funny.

Prom is meh. I went to mine but we went for 20 minutes but me and my date got bored so we went to her house, drank/smoked and fooled around. WAY better than going to prom.

I feel bad cause my parents spent money on a tuxedo and money so I could take her to a fancy restaurant. All so I could spend the night high in fancy clothes haha.
Sounds like a good time to me lol

I always wanted to design a prom dress, but I never wanted to be in one.

I do NOT find school parties to be fun unless you've preplanned to meet other chat buddies there who also won't be dancing. Dancing? F**k that mess, they won't play any music you like even if you could dance or tolerate holding someone else's sweaty palms for 3 hours.

The Halloween party is one not to miss though. I remember going as Carmen Sandiego & seeing a girl dressed as a werewolf throw up on the cafeteria floor. I relive that moment every time Lumpy eats something gross on CultMoo.

I never went to any of the school functions. Turned out well, I think, considering the Principal would always come on the PA the next school day and (rightfully) complain that all the kids were a bunch of shits because they literally could not keep from getting drunk and having sex on the dance floor. And under the stairs. And in the bathrooms. And out by the baseball diamond. And in the back of the bus.
O.O I can't imagine the reaction of my old high school if they caught people having sex. It would have probably been expulsion without any possibility to appeal. (but than again, it was a catholic high school)
The harshest punishment I remember anyone getting for that was a week's suspension. For reference, in Middle School, I was given two weeks suspension for being beaten up by two other kids. No, not beating someone else up, I got suspension for being beaten up. But that's 'Murrika for you.
Yeah my school is like that as well, except there's also suspension for trying to break up the fight

I learnt about that the hard way

That's 'Straya for you

It funny....But I had the same experience. In Jr. High, I was a bullier of bullies & all of my friends were the kind of people who got picked on. I NEVER got in trouble....Until I tried to break up a cat fight in highschool. The girls were blocking the library door with their petty fight.

I guess school teaches us all that you will be rewarded for starting fights & punished for tattling; just shows how messed up their priorities are.

Never went because the school sucks at throwing events, the prom is a bit expensive, the food sucks, and the music is crap.

Every year people would complain about it and some people would smuggle drugs in it or something

I wanted to go to mine this May but that changed quickly. First, my plans for a date fell through, so I'll be going alone with a table full of couples (and one other single guy, but no matter what its going to be awkward), and secondly my asshole friends and acquiantances voted for me for Prom King, and enough of them did it that I made it to the second stage of voting and could potentially be it. (It's a small school so getting 28 votes I think it was put me through) 1 embarrassing situation on top of another (potentially) embarrassing one. Just grand...

Isn't prom like a dance? I guess if you're into dancing, the type of dancing you'd do at a prom mind you, then you should go.

The idea of going due to social pressure is kinda ridiculous though, especially if you really don't want to.

I didn't go to mine, glad I didn't to be honest. Everyone involved thought it was boring as all hell.

Nope you are in the right.
I didn't go to mine because I knew I wouldn't enjoy it and it would therefore be a waste of time and money.

Apparently prom was pretty crap with only the idiots that showed up drunk having anything resembling "fun".

Just stay home or go out with some like minded friends and have fun the way you want to have fun. Anyone gives you a hard time you tell 'em to fuck right off.

Edit: And if it makes you feel any better my Aunt didn't understand either (though the rest of my family did) and she tried to pressure me to go as well.
I told her off and then refused to go to graduation to spite her.
Also, high school graduation is nothing special either. I had so much more fun grabbing some steak with my family and then gaming the night away as everyone else spent hours in stupid and uncomfortable gowns getting their names called for an empty envelope.

its a waste of time and money, if you don't want to go, don't go. You wont miss much, just a bunch of mediocre food, dressed up chavs/ned (depending on where your school is) showing off how cool they are because i have a date and shes puttin out, and people burning money left right and center.

I was the most anti social kid in school but 2 weeks to a week before, I decided to go to my prom after a girl I liked said that if I went she would have went with me. ((I told her I wasnt going)) It was probably one of the most fun experiences in my high school career nobody was worried about cliques or putting anybody down or anything it was just everybody having fun and I'm very glad that I went. Its one of those milestone things that you can look back on and remember. I recommend going.

I went to mine, convinced by the arguments you are hearing. Didn't have a date, of course. Didn't dance. Hated the music and most of the company. Fortunately, I found an empty room with a radio, and I listened to it for two hours, until the prom ended.

So, I do not recommend prom unless you are socially functional. Even then, only if the food is really good.

You got a date for prom; I'm very sceptical of your supposed anti-socialness.

Tell your family that they should just shut up. It's your choice, and if they have a problem with it, they should just grow the fuck up. When it comes time for my 'Formal' (What they call Proms here in Australian Schools), I'm gunna tell them to stick it up their ass, and organize something better for that evening. I don't care about 90% of the people at my school, and never will. They're mostly loathable idiots.

If you don't want to go, you don't want to go.

I already graduated, but I got invited by one of my younger friends, so I'm going to be going WITHOUT the obligation.

Obligation is stupid in pretty much all its forms.

I know exactly how you feel, I absolutely hated my high school formal (we call it formal here) and had a really shitty time. I had a good looking date and all but yeah, not my thing at all. I strongly recommend not going if you know its not going to be your thing either.

I didn't go either. My reasoning was "If I don't like the people I go to school with, why would I want to go to a formal party with them?"
