Portal (Hell the whole Orange Boxis good)
COD4-5 (unlike most FPSs you can level up, getting better weapons and the like)
Halo 1-2
GTA IV (Hey, I liked it)
Saints Row 2
Warcraft 3 (and better yet, DotA!)
Half-Life
Assassin's Creed (only if you don't have it on a console. Its spec requirements are /very/ high)
Fable
Far Cry 1 & 2
Age of Empires 3
Quake 3
World of Goo (great game, heartily recommend it)
Psychonauts
Beyond Good & Evil

... Yeah, that looks like a good list.
Dude he said single player, I've not played dota single player recently but I can't see it working particularly well.

the sims. try it.
Why would you say that the sims is for causal gamers.
The sims is liked by a massive percentage of 'real' gamers, although if you're against piracy I'd stay away from it (I didn't found it very boring, even with most of the expansions), I hear that it costs well over a million dollars with all the expansions......

Homeworld 1, 2 and cataclysm. old but original.
I can't offer any more, I play old games for their originality :p and addictivity :p
Another good one is Imperium Galactica II... or something like that.
I got really addicted to that game.

Most have probably been said, but Doom, Quake 1 and 2, Wolfenstein and Return to Castle, Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2, Half-Life 1/2, Blood, Postal 2, Dues Ex, and STALKER.

Sorry for double post, but DotA works very well on single player. You just need an edition that has AI for it, which is on the DotA website. Obviously not as hard as human players though.

Not as hard as human players?
The AI maps I've played NEVER have halfway decent AI, the only way to make them even remotely challenging, even in a 5v1 scenario, is to mod their gold income. DotA is a team game, I really don't see the point in playing against AI.

Deus Ex, both of them.

Flatspace II. No story, the second has better gameplay and a "Flatspace I" mode. It's a space game. You buy ships and stuff and shoot and trade. The whole universe is randomly generated.

<a href=http://www.roguelikedevelopment.org/archive/index.php>Rogue. Randomly generated dungeons, magic items, potions, scrolls. You try to survive the dungeon, fight monsters and stuff.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. Not Clear Sky.

<a href=http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php>Iji. Sci-fi side-scrolling RPG/shooter. It's the best sidescroller I've ever played.

<a href=http://www.wolfire.com/black-shades>Black Shades. If you like unforgiving gunplay, this is an awesome game. The combat is just great, and you really have to rely on instincts and reflexes to succeed.

And all of these games except STALKER and Deus Ex are free, so have fun.

hmm, I'm more of an RTS fan so:

-Dawn of War
-Homeworld 2
-Any of the Total War Series
-Supreme Commander
-Mass Effect
-Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
-KOTOR 1
-Fallout 3 (Tentatively)
-Crysis (If your computer doesn't melt down)

Just to let you know Dawn of War > Starcraft if you have to choose please pick dawn of war.
That's opinion based. So if you want an answer based on opinion, I'm sure the vast majority of gamers (hardcore and casual) will say the opposite, which means based on the average opinion Starcraft > DoW. But again, that's all opinion, both are good and I recommend both. I wouldn't recommend DoW2, but there are plenty of people who would.

Well, most of the games I'd recommend are up there, although I don't think Dungeon Siege has been mentioned and that's one of my personal favorites. I like DS2 as well...There are plenty who would disagree...

But if you play anything, play Evil Genius. Underrated, IMO. It's fun, and I'm not sure many people have heard of it.

Ask a bunch of geeks for good games, get "Dr. Oddworld, or how I stopped going to work and learned to stop sleeping."

Oh, and you want to play Evil Genius.

Hey escapists, over the summer I'm getting a new computer, and I was wanting to know some notable single player PC games to try. I like FPS's, RPG's, Adventure and RTS games. Any recommendations would be helpful to my library!
Only new stuff or older games?

If you're open to older stuff, I can recommend System Shock 2 (FPS with RPG elements and awesome atmosphere), Arx Fatalis (First Person-RPG, set in an underground world), Sacrifice (a mixture of Action, RPG and Strategy) off the top of my head.

Bioshock is pretty good, too, though it's a dumbed-down System Shock 2 (more action, less RPG, good story though).

If you're looking for pure Action with a little Japanese Horror mixed in, I can also recommend FEAR (first part, including the first addon). The second addon isn't as great as the main game and the first part, but still okay. FEAR 2 is a more console-ish version of FEAR 1, I recommend FEAR 1 over FEAR 2.

I'm not very up-to-date on new releases.

If you can enjoy older games... There are lots of excellent single-player RPGs to be discovered.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Planescape Torment
Fallout 1 & 2
KOTOR 1 & 2
NWN 1 & 2

Just to name a few.
Seconded. Except maybe for Torment. I tried, I really did, but it was kind of meh.

The others all had me playing until 3am.

It's about time some one other than me suggested Sacred.

I was also going to add Thief 1 and 2. OOOOOLD 3D graphics, but gameplay and story that competes with today's standards.

No One Lives Forever and Max Payne are some of my favorite shooters. Tron 2.0 came out around the same time and also was awesome.
