Whilst I appreciate the sentiment, why doesn't he just forgo the 'just pirate it' line and instead start selling Minecraft like the Humble Indie Bundle? Pay what you can or what you think the game's worth? Or even better, give the game away for free and simply ask for donations?

But regarding Minecraft I've had it for a long time now. Looking back it was the best £10 (I think at the time) I ever spent on a game.

People are going to pirate it whether or not Notch tells them to. The difference is

1. How much time it takes Notch to program anti-pirating software
2. How pissed off the hackers will be after they get rid of the anti-pirating software

No, Fuck you Notch. I will not support a world wherein if you can't afford it then you're encouraged to just take it anyways. That's not how a functional world works.
Yeah...NO, I heavily disagree. As a matter of a fact I think that this system just happens to better and benefit his business model. I can't speak for other devs but he creates entertainment and does not profit from a person who can not afford the game NOT being able to play it. You see as far as he is concerned if someone can't buy the game now it is better that they pirate it and enjoy it and potentially buy it later (for online) and spread it to their friends and so on.

Another argument is that sometimes people did not intend to buy a game but then pirate it and go wow I like this (sure in a lot of cases they don't buy it afterwards but those cases are people who would not have bought it in the first place and the ones who do buy it (who would not have bought it in the first place (bracket inception)) are extra sales for the Dev).

Also just because one cannot afford something does not necessarily mean that they should not be able to access it (monetary systems are quite flawed and leave a lot of people out of the loop). In the case of a game dev he really just wants people to enjoy his product (in the case of notch especially who created the game on his own with little intention of selling it and only thought about commercialization when he realised he had made something special).
