I just bought myself a new HP Dv6-3077CA today. It's packing a Core i5 and a nice 1GB Radeon HD 5650! Sounds great doesn't it? This should definitely run Starcraft II easily right?

Well, if that was the case I would probably not be writing a thread about it. It seems that the Drivers that I currently have are outdated and are not supported by Starcraft II. Which means the game won't detect my Graphics Hardware and won't allow me to fix my Graphics settings.

Now Most people would reply, "Go download the newer drivers then! You should be able to upgrade from 10.1 to 10.7 by now!" To which I can only reply: "HP won't let me."

What the hell is this crap? Why won't HP simply allow me to download the Drivers from the ATI Mobility Catalyst Manager and be happy with their product? Why must I be restricted to their own crappy version of the Drivers which are only available on their website?

This is wrong. I'm sure many of you will agree. So what are your thoughts on this? Oh, and can someone maybe get me a damn fix for this? I'd love to see my Starcraft II on Max Graphics sometime soonish...

This is why HP sucks for laptops. They shove their unneeded "maintenance" software on there that does jack, and in many cases cause more problems than solve.

Uninstall whatever HP label crap you can find. Leave ATK drivers though as those allow the use of Laptop Keyboard functions.

Then uninstall the crap HP driver and then boot into safemode, use this ( http://www.drivercleaner.net/ or http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745 ), boot back into standard Windows. Then let Win7 pull the drivers, or install from the AMD website yourself.

If that doesn't work, or if the Factory HP Win7 install won't let you uninstall the bloatware, I suggest a Dump, Wipe, Reinstall of Win7.

I used to have this problem with my Alienware laptop too. I have a Mobility Radeon HD 3860. I had to use Mobility Modder in order to install the latest update, but ATI recently started including laptop drivers on their website so I don't have to use Mobility Modder anymore.

Is your graphics card a Mobility Radeon HD 5650? You might have been trying to install the wrong driver if you didn't select the right files for the Mobility cards. If so, you can download the notebook drivers from the ATI website and it should work. I'm looking at the page right now. There is a list of all laptops that are not supported and it looks like HP is not one of them.

This is what I attempted first. Then I got a message from the Catalyst Driver Manager (or w/e it's called) that It cannot install the Drivers and to try finding them on the Manufacturer's website.

Or if you want to be VERY fancy and geeky about it. Dump the install you have, install a Linux, install VirtualBox, install a virtual Windows for the games that absolutly need windows and can't be wined.

Or not... =P

Hmm the version i see for your laptop is actually barely 1 month old, version 8.741.1.1000 ?

Edit: and just in case, use "Can you run it?" ( http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/ ) to make absolutely sure your hardware is supported, it should be but laptops are a little moody when it comes to games.

Edit2 : nevermind the edit, i checked for fun and your card is sufficient to run it...

I ran the "Can You Run It?" app and even it can't detect my Video Hardware properly! It's saying that I fail for running Starcraft II because my Video Card isn't powerful enough. But when I look at the Video Card requirements it says that all I'm running is "ATI Display Adapter (0x68C1)"

What is with that?

Can't you uninstall current drivers then whack new ones on?

What exactly is stopping you from installing new drivers and why can't you uninstall that? I don't actually get what is restricting you. I doubt HP lock the hardware in their laptops, a clean install should work.

Your drivers are definitely not acting right, your card should be recognized by name (Mobility Radeon etc) if it's just the generic name it means it's using the basic windows driver, not the company one.If installing the driver i linked directly dosen't work, uninstall the current ones, then reboot, then reinstall the new ones.

Try flashing the Bios or the Vbios. That might help. I'm sure you can find a guide on how to do it on HP's website, unless they're absolutely useless. I had to flash my Vbios for my ATI 5850 Mobility to be able to upgrade the software. It was a pain, but it runs perfect now.

EDIT: Be careful though, flashing a BIOS can have its drawbacks.

There's a site I used for modded NVIDIA laptop drivers. It doesn't have ATI drivers though, and I don't know of an alternative unfortunately.

Right about here I was ready to rage, but then...

You must have meant to buy an ASUS. Don't worry, I forgive you.
So now I have to say you're completely right.

Anyways, for what you're talking about, I sometimes get weird things with games, too, since they don't understand what the hell a GeForce GT 120M is. I'd say just go to the ATi/AMD website and get the newest drivers, or check the HP website if that doesn't work. If nothing works, I'm sure there's a config file somewhere you can edit.

Sorry to hear that. My brother wanted to buy a notebook too, but I advised him not buy a notebook. I have seen many with a lot of problems.

You almost activated my Trap-Card!

But yes, when I die I'll be buried with my ASUS.

HP are fucking bastards. They cut off the official support so they have their own leash on what you get. The problem is, they take AGES (and that's not just a few angry customers, that's literally every single one of their users) to bring their updates to speed.

But to be fair, ATI are cunts too, they often fail to release drivers for a lot of cards themselves. Frankly, it's a shoddy support for notebooks and one of the main reasons I prefer Nvidia, everything's so much simpler with them.

There is hope however! Go to this site and follow their instructions to the letter:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php
It should solve it for ya, not hard either, just again - follow the instructions slowly and to the letter.

I've had so much shit with Windows 7, NVidia and getting the correct graphics drivers to work, that I've just started to write my own in powerstrip.

It's risky, but it's saved me twice now.

Did you try try Omega Drivers?

http://www.omegadrivers.net/

Give it a shot. Worst case scenario it nukes your hard drive, so it'll be doing you a favor.

I bought a laptop two years ago. Wanted to install Linux. Six months after I bought it, ATI declared my graphics chip "legacy" and so they weren't supporting it for linux anymore.

SIX MOTHERFUCKING MONTHS! THAT'S NOT LEGACY, THAT'S NEW!!!
