The moments in reality or gaming that really does make it personal...personally. Although it happens a lot in reality since you are who you are, games give it a very personal sense that it is no longer the issues of the characters but those that involve you as well. This can range from movies - Bambi's mum, books - character deaths, games - character death, series - character death and/or just reality. I can't think of anything else besides character death that affects a person.
Sorry, I'm still new at forums and accidentally posted it twice...this is the actual one.

I think for me it was when little Nanako Dojima is kidnapped, personally, coming home to an empty house where a happy and cheerful 'Welcome home, Big Bro' no longer echoes through the empty halls really can be sad.

2nd Spoiler - I still don't hold it against Namatame or Adachi for what they did, and I wished they have had the true ending and a world for them was peaceful.

3rd Spoiler - Since they were unwitting pawns of Izanami, she had good reasons for what she did also...

When Mao took my diamond mine in Civ 4. He and his empire did not go unpunished. Nuked 'em on the last turn.

Phantasia 4 is a text-based online game that I used to frequent often a few years back. It borrows a lot from Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons. During one playthrough, I accidentally ran into Saruman, an evil wizard from LotR. I fought him intensely and eventually won but not before he cast a spell that, to paraphrase, "made me feel different somehow." I checked my stats and found a bombshell: he changed my freaking gender! I vowed then and there to obliterate Saruman in the most humiliating way possible every time I faced him, no matter which game.

Oh yeah, it's personal.

X-Com.

I had a soldier that had been an UFO breacher for every mission and managed to survive for 15 missions or so, a total badass. One mission, she gets shot and dies.

Next mission, and I give everyone explosives and destroy the map.

Losing my cool is not an option with my play-style. I'm a tactician and strategist. If I lose my cool, I don't think straight.

Hmm I can't remember...but I do recall at least one instance when I went psychotic and wanted whoever I was meant to get to suffer...I seriously cannot remember the game though...

More of a demonstration on how quickly my mind works when I focus on something. Note that the whole part where he was planning out what he was going to do occurred in the timespan of a few seconds. It gets irritating when I want to go to sleep, thought.

Not me, but my brother had a good one on his first day of Fallout: New Vegas.

To elaborate, he always wanted to join the Enclave in Fallout 3, so when he heard you could join the Legion in New Vegas, he was quite thrilled. He even laughed when he found Nipton.

Unfortunately, the Legion, in all their scripted glory, killed everyone at Ranger Station Charlie. Apparently he really liked those guys and was rather miffed and spent the next 20 hours of playtime dedicated to going to the other side of the river and hunting down Legionaries.

Twas a joke, but that's actually pree cool. I have seen Sherlock Holmes :p I couldn't do that in say...a fight...or any situation for that matter. My mind doesn't concentrate that well to pull that shit off.
It's an acquired skill, really. Learning how to manipulate people really helps when fighting. Strategy games are another interesting beast. My micromanagement is shit; I just can't react that fast normally. If I can see what my targets are and have a few seconds to plan, though, my effectiveness jumps.

Civ is one of my favorite game series because of this.

That is a good thing. Games with multiple factions should do that. They should evoke emotions in you that make you hate one faction and support another, but that hated/supported faction should be different to different players based on that players view of the actions of each faction. Well done, New Vegas!

It's not just character death. The first time I ever suddenly had a personal grudge to act out in the game, it was when the Nasty Gatekeeper takes Heather hostage in Dynamite Headdy. I still don't know why. Maybe it was because I thought she'd betrayed me until I realized that she was fighting the boss with me. Maybe it was the sudden whiplash in setting, and the surprisingly freaky contrast with the first Gatekeeper. Maybe it was Heather's cry of "Help me...!" Maybe it was the <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnwunBUlPFk>blood-pumpingly awesome boss music.

Either way, it just got personal, and I felt free to give in to the rage.

Also, if you've played Tales of Symphonia, you can probably guess why I hate this guy so much.

I get really into things once I am playing with friends and am able to coordinate. It brings out my inner tactician.

Just recently me and two friends were playing Manhunt mode on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Coming up with all these little plans and actually being able to execute them is just so awesome... and we really get into it. My favorite example.

Omega: Ok, I'll work as a decoy. J, you hide on the bench. I'll stun one guy, odds are his friends are covering him, you stun him.
M: How about I hide in the hay in case there's a third one?
Omega: Good idea.
J: I got Templar vision, so if one's hiding while the first guy strikes, I can see him.
Omega: Ok, odds are I won't make it, and there's probably only two guys. If two of us die, whoever's left needs to run.
M: That guy should try to lead him to the others once they repawn, or just escape.
All: *some variation of "Let's do this!"*

15 seconds later, not only did all three of us survive, but we stunned the entire enemy team. Lulz were had.

Define "take it personally" do you mean when a video game actually made me relate to it or just a time that I flipped shit and swore bloody vengeance? Because the latter happens all the time: Sephiroth in KH1, That evil Sparda monster in DMC3, Zeus in GoW2 after he ran like a pansy and I swore I'd tear every monster in 3 a new one to get to him. But honestly touching moments...... the only one I can think of is that one scene from Resonance of Fate when Zephyr gets saved by Leanne who refuses to allow him to commit assisted suicide......... great scene.
