Yep. The Thieves Guild alone is much better.
None of that Robin Hood crap Oblivion had you doing.
Oblivion was still a pretty good game, but Skyrim is certainly an improvement.

Let me put it this way. I got it Friday morning and am just now getting back to the real world. Yes, in my opinion it is. I have not had a game actually hold my attention for almost a week straight like this game has since FF7. It is easily the best game that has come out in the last three years.

The only thing that it fell short on, in my opinion, is the skills/leveling/magic system. It seemed to be dumbed down from Oblivion. Whether that was intentional or just a side effect of the new system in Skyrim, I don't know. But even that is not a big complaint from me.

The question is not "Is skyrim better than Oblivion" but it's "is Skyrim better than Morrowind"
>_>
<_<

But yeah, Skyrim is certainly better than Oblivion.
The ONLY thing I liked in Oblivion which isn't in Skyrim is casting spells while having a (two-handed) sword equipped. Its much harder to play my warlock now :(

I also hated oblivion. And I love Skyrim. You should definitely give it a go.
Ok, getting into a fight with a dragon (which is in itself hugely satisfying and fun) only to find out that after the battle, every NPC that was around before the fight is now dead or nowhere to be found, including escorts and horses... yes, that can be frustrating.

Hard to say, because I haven't played Oblivion since it came out. But I enjoyed the hell of it and played it for like 100 hours, and I'm enjoying the hell out of Skyrim and have already put 30+ hours into it, so I'd say who cares which one I liked better?

Let me just put this sidebar in before I say this. Oblivion, this time last week, was my favourite game of all time.

But now? Oblivion just looks like an unfinished beta for Skyrim. Everything was improved. EVERYTHING.

Game of the decade.

Skyrim is much, much better. But the UI on the PC is an absolute stinker - worse than Oblivion, also combat still doesn't flow very well. It seems toolbars and icons is beyond the capabilities of Bethesda.

But in general it is a very good game, and if you like RPGs it's definately worth a shot.

As mentioned, Skyrim is better in almost every single way. One thing that has slightly bothered me though, and although I've really only completed a small amount of quests... A lot of the quests I have done so far seem to send you quite a long way away from where you receive it. Though they talk about it as if it's only around the corner, and a lot don't seem to have justification for being so far away. It kind of removes the sense of largeness and the whole "explore on your own terms" thing. This is perhaps done to encourage exploration, but I don't like it... Maybe I'm overracting though, maybe it's not that far apart... I don't know!

EDIT: It's not only going to be game of the year, it'll probably be on most peoples 'favorite game of all time' list.

As someone who loves Oblivion, I would have to say, YES.

Skyrim pretty much took what Oblivion had and improved it tenfold. Graphics look better, characters look better, the combat is better, story (so far) is better. Pretty much everything about this game is better than Oblivion.

Also, you couldn't fight dragons in Oblivion without mods. That's kind of a plus too.

Yeah, it's way better. The only thing I'm finding disappointing are the companions (not the faction). After playing New Vegas, the followers you get in Skyrim are just mundane.

I'm enjoying it more than Oblivion, but I really, really liked Oblivion for the first 30 hours or so, and then its faults started to become more and more grating, so I think I need a little more time in Skyrim before I can say for sure where it fits into the Elder Scrolls quality scale.

Its far better than Oblivion, in every way you can imagine it to be.

That being said the gameplay is simply just refined Oblivion. There are still only a handful of enemy types (Casters, People that beat on you, and now Dragons! Although the constructs are neat, too bad there are so few). While every thing you choose to do will be viable, the only meaningful decision you will actually make will be whether to level casting, stealthy jazz, or beating on things. There are only a few different types of scenery throughout the entire game, which is even more prevalent when exploring dungeons. Inventory space is still a pain in the ass to manage, especially because you can't sort storage devices. Oh and shouts are neat, but rarely have an impact on the actual game (Seriously the only one I've found that has a decent impact is distract).

I think the best way to describe it is that they only came up with so much good stuff and new ideas, but then they spread it fairly thin. If you didn't like Oblivion I don't know if I could genuinely recommend it.

I was a late comer to Oblivion, having only 1st played it in late 2010, and played Morrowind even later (early 2011) but i'd have to say Skyrim is alot more Morrowind'y then Oblivion'y and Skyrim < Oblivion by far.

While the general look has improved, and the game feels more dynamic, realistic and visceral, I somehow don't get the same sense of freedom I had in Oblivion or Morrowind.
Things were simpler and more clear, which gave me a better idea of what I can do and can't do (Or should/shouldn't - cause and effect). Somehow with Skyrim I just ended up going from quest to quest to quest to quest...

I think I'll just have to wait for mods to make it a bit more tailored for me.

I loved Oblivion. I loved it to death. That being said, Skyrim is leaps and bounds better than it, and not just gameplay wise, mind you. The world feels much more alive, and I actually feel a sense of conflict and political strife looming over the whole of Skyrim. The voice acting is much improved, and yes, the gameplay as well.

I think it's been said before, but damn, Oblivion is like a really early prototype of Skyrim when you think about it. Skyrim wins because it has:

Better dungeons and environments
Better voice acting (I don't know why, but something about Oblivion detracted from even Sean Bean's dialogue)
Third person animations that aren't completely imbecilic
Character models that don't look completely imbecilic
NPC's that aren't completely - wait, scratch that one.
Battle companions!! (big one for me)
Dragons!

It also ditches outdated RPG elements in favour of more streamlined combat. So yeah, this game wins in every aspect.
