actually there's a much more practical reason for the giant shoulders. On the original Game boy it was the only way they could clearly differentiate between the two sets of armor. though you're right, the Varia shoulders are much better looking.

And i can't find a picture of him, with his gun but Caine the Longshot of Trigun has a sniper rifle i guesstimate at 10 meters long. He hits dead on at two miles reach with ease... yeah...

side note: those mecha are at LEAST 20 meter's tall, except Chouginga Gurren Lagann, which is rougly the size of the moon. Yes, the MOON. Also, the titular Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is several times our galaxy's width and, judging by it's way of movement, moves at several hundred times the speed of light. Dunno how that's supposed to be possible, then again, nothing makes sense in that show
