I was wondering what other Escapists thoughts were on nuclear energy. Have questions? Post em' here and see if anyone can answer them.

I think it's a good sustainable* source of energy. I think it should be combined with other clean sources of energy to make as much clean energy as possible. Of course the threat of a meltdown is always there, but with advancements in nuclear reactor technology the threat is minimal. The only thing better than nuclear is fusion!

So, what are your thoughts?

*I know I said sustainable, but what really meant was "Just as good as [insert fossil fuel here]"

I'm definitely for it. I think at the moment it's the most feasible source of 'Green' energy. The important factor I see is what we'd do with waste, which I reckon should be launched into space.

As an added bonus from an Australian perspective, we'd still make money cause we've got shitloads of Uranium.

the perfect energy source. did you know it creates no pollutants, makes less than a barrel of waste in 2 months, and all of its depleted uranium is recycled? Its an awesome energy source.

I like the idea behind it, but most people will never get behind nuclear power because when they think of nuclear power they think of Chernobyl and 3 mile island. Despite the fact that it has become much safer, people are afraid of meltdowns.

all though i agree, wouldnt launching into space cause more co2 , unless it was a solar/nuclear rocket.

You can't launch nuclear waste into space don't be so stupid. Do you have any idea how much that would cost? Not to mention is one explodes and scatters it all over the landscape. The safest way getting rid of it at the moment is by burying it and that's not a fun idea to pitch.

I think nuclear energy is the best kind of energy we can have. Sadly everyone is stuck in chernobyl mode about the whole thing, the fact is new reactors like the ones in france are idiotically safe, so safe in fact i'd happily life next to one knowing a. cheap housing and b. I get to shout at french people c. Safe, very safe.

As for the space thing, its not a great idea. I think governments should build a really big underground place in a 3rd world country and put it their about 70 miles under ground. Because I'm pretty sure the 3rd world country could use the money we would pay them, let alone the jobs etc. Of course, I would make sure it had oversight by the UN or something to make sure standard where maintained etc. the UN loves that kind of stuff.

I don't claim to know much about nuclear energy. However, from what I learned from my Environmental science class, I believe it is not the solution to our energy problems. Nuclear energy will eventually run into the same problem the oil currently has; it is not a sustainable resource. Eventually, nuclear power will not be a viable resource due to a lack of raw materials. So relying on it to solve our energy problems would be foolish to say the least. That's not even touching all the other issues that arise when you consider the handling and disposal of the different byproducts of nuclear reactions.

I'm not saying we should dismantle nuclear power plants. I'm just saying that thinking it can magically solve our energy problems means you're not thinking about the long term. I'd rather invest in energy sources that will be sustainable for a longer period of time.

The perfect energy source would be one that produces no pollutants whilst being sustainable in both short and long term. Nuclear energy, from what I know, is neither of those.

I'm guessing you never saw Futurama's episode with of the ball of garbage headed to Earth

Like others have said, launching it into space isn't very safe. Although I do have a proposal to get some of them money back when we some of your uranium:

You could give us some of that money back and let us store it in the salt mines of New Mexico! It's a win-win... I think...

Why not drop the waste into a volcano and return it to the Earth? Anyway, if we can get fusion power to work, we won't need anything else.

Did you really need a reason other than that one?

On Topic: I like it and wish they'd get around to it. Power bills be rising and a nuclear reactor or two would cut out the greedy bastards charging so much for their coal-powered plants. Of course, knowing my government they'd find some way to fuck it up and end up having us pay more for cheaper electricity.

The only problem is disposing of the waste. Find a country with a massive and uninhabited desert, dig a big hole, and dump it all there. Or in France. That'll teach them for making bloody Renaults.

The Sahara would do very nicely. Or France.

It's the next best thing to Antimatter in terms of raw power! Sure, it's not safe compared to windmills, but hey, we need to take risks, right?

I think its a MUCH better energy source than the coal plants we have.

But, as people have noticed, the waste and peoples fears of a nuclear holocaust are in the way.
