The report comes as some lawmakers are discussing a ban on the possession of child pornography in Japan, where only production and distribution, and not possession, of obscene images of people under 18 are illegal

And yet, even though they're 'backwards' and 'behind the times' they're still better than all these Americans who are decrying Japan as some sort of crazy state of rapists and child molesters.

They are crazy. They built two giant robots for Thor's sake. Their porn is generally pretty goddamn weird. But child molesters? Not as bad as you America! Not as bad as you.

Those "record heights" are extremely LOW.

I hate it when people manipulate statistics like this. Look at the population of Japan. And the number of incidents, 289. 289. It's a record for them because Japan has almost no crime. If you hadn't noticed, Japan also had the lowest censorship. They produced the most graphic, visceral violent stuff, the most hardcore pornography, they produced lolicon and shotacon manga and anime, etc. Well, over the past decade they have been becoming increasingly westernized in their attitudes. So they've been stripping all nudity from childrens programming, and reducing violence and sexual innuendo. They've been producing less hardcore material. And the crime rate has started to rise. Expect it to keep rising for as long as they buy into this clinically insane idea that imaginary cartoons and fictional videos lead to problems in society. Understand, I am not saying violent material prevents violent crime. Although there is good research to suggest that this is true, I don't believe it a direct effect of the media. However, when you start to squeeze a society, they will rebel. When you start taking people and treating them like idiots who can't watch a violent movie and be trusted to their own actions afterward, they will be resentful of the condescension. The fact that people around the world allow their freedoms to be taken away without any scientific evidence whatsoever that the things being taken away will provide any help, or even that they won't cause great damage, is ludicrous.

Watch as Japan continues to Westernize and accept more and more censorship, becoming more and more conservative. And watch as their crime rate climbs. This happens in any society that starts laying more and more laws on their citizens for nonsensical reasons.

Without more info, this really doesn't say much, have they been investigating more, are the judges more likely to sentence the people, are more people coming out and reporting people they know, or are just more people into child porn than a few years ago?

also, when the numbers are close to one in a million, as reprehensible as it, its not exactly widespread and 'nuking the japs' is like amputating both legs because of a touch of athlete's foot between two toes.

Say goodbye to Preacher, one of the greatest graphic novels of all time, as there's a scene where he finds a child porn studio, its all implied, but I'm sure it wouldn't stop the rampaging anti cp horde from finding it sick, even tho its anti cp. I'm sure there's hordes of other books, movies, etc that would suffer from a ban too.

I think the great Alan Moore (Watchmen) was against it too, saying it's needlessly restrictive in terms of art, and there's already obscenity laws in place to protect.

I'd advise anyone to watch the special episode of Brass Eye, about how the media twist these things out of all proportion.

I'm sure they said that in the NAMBLA episode of South Park.

I want to say here that "children" is defined by an arbitrary number of times you have been around the sun. In another episode of South Park, it talked about a 5 year old having sex with a hot blond adult teacher. I would almost consider that molestation. Sure, he is male, but for me at least once you get turned on, you can never turn yourself off. When anything catches your attention, it's hard to stop paying attention to it. For the most powerful urge, that of sex, it's pretty much impossible. You're locked in forever. Five is FAR to young an age to start, even for a boy. I would say 12. That's when I was shown porn because I was apparently a "preppy" and quite kid. And that pretty much ended my somewhat blissful ignorance of the opposite sex.

Still, my qualm with "Dude, you have sex with children!" besides how much I hate teh word dude, is that it's putting people in a category. People are simply not the same. They are therefore not equal. Putting everyone under 18 in the category of "children" is demeaning. I really got pissed that I was officially just a thing that couldn't make it's own decisions until I was 18. I never had a satisfactory victory, so I'm going to keep trying even though I'm over 18. Still, I have no doubt that there are some truly sadistic child molesters, and an orderly society cannot allow them to roam free. However, as long as children is defined as under 18, "Dude, you have sex with children" doesn't fly with me. People are gay well before they are 18. They probably experience absolute hell from bullies (just by who they are, even if no one knows they're gay) and an older gay person whos been through the same thing would probably be very comforting. So I would say the age of consent should be grade 7. When you get out of Elementary school and your tween civility is replaced with hormones, the same ones people over 18 have. Or better yet, ask some child psychologists what they think.

All I'm saying is that it (the official definition of child molester) seems discriminatory against gays, because if a guy in his early teens had sex with a woman, no one would call it child moslestation. (Unless that person just came out of the closet in that he's a RETARD) But if the same thing happened between a guy the same age and a teenage boy CALL THE LYNCH SQUAD! IT'S A PEDOPHILE!!!! That's how it seems to me.

I'm fully aware of the Japanese eroge market.

Why then - with all their supposed child porn and rape games - are their Child Porn percentage figures less than America (see the post at the top of page 2), hmm? I'd love a non-emotional response to this question for once.

My post was hardly emotional, I was simply stating that those games exist.
I have no idea why the per capita figures are lower in Japan than the USA.

Remember that in the USA it is illegal to have any child pornography, where as in Japan it is not. That could be a significant factor behind the statictics. Its skewing them in Japan's favor really.

I have a serious doubt until proven otherwise. I'm sure lots of other crimes are probably high than a lot in Japans
