Technically, it's illegal on the nurse's part. By revealing those details to a random caller she breached the Data Protection Act of 1998, and the fact that it was medical details (i.e. "highly sensitive") meant she probably would have at least lost her job.

Making a fool out of someone (which is all the DJs did), on the other hand, is not illegal.

Is there any law about impersonating the royals? (not like they would have much jurisdiction over Aussies)

Well, she's Australia's head of state too, so it wouldn't be that unlikely for us to share the law. No idea if there is one specifically for that though. And I'd have thought it'd require a more thorough falsification of identity than basically saying "I'm the queen" in a funny accent.

OT: DJs have nothing to do with it. There's no way in hell you would reasonably expect that to be the outcome, the lynch mob is stupid.

Let's face it, it'll either be because of something totally unrelated, or the reaction of someone who was, mentally, very unwell.

I have a question, I have read like 10 news articles about this and I still can't figure out that HOW HAVE PEOPLE ASSUMED THE THE SUICIDE WAS LINKED TO THE PRANK CALL??

Are you really having a hard time understanding how a massively humiliating event could lead to a suicide? Or are you being sarcastic?

If you're really implying she was humiliated enough to commit suicide while being the mother of 2 children...then all I can say is that was an incredibly selfish and stupid move on her behalf.
In that case she was either incredibly weak-willed or already suffering from bad mental conditions. These kind of people commit suicide over almost anything, it's hard to stop them NOT committing suicide.
Like those weak-willed girls who who commit suicide after people keep texting them "u r fat" for a month.

From watching this video alone.. the Dj's just asked if she was ok.. that little snip is hardly asking for personal information, the nurse told them information without having to ask, after reading it i really cant be bothered to find the rest of the sound bit to see if they did ask for anything other than if she was well

What fascination? I'm pretty sure we couldn't give a crap less and it's the tourists that do, seeing as they are just a tourist attraction.

Granted there are people out their who think of them as celebrities, but they only get the same recognition as pop artists. It's just some of these ones are clinging onto life with some vigour that I'm starting to assume is supernatural.

It's pretty stupid to try to get confidential information of that sort, but I've no idea if it's illegal.

The nurse really shouldn't have given out the confidential information, probably hence the suicide.

Either it was the final tiny straw that pushed her over the edge after a life full of misery or it's because it's simply that time of the year.

It's not like this is the first prank call commited by a radio station. She wouldn't have killed herself if she didn't already have major personal issues going on in her life. And if she did do it because she felt she had failed to protect her majesty's honor or whatever, than that's still on her. Or maybe she was that petrified of all the media attention and ridiculing she was going to get. Still, to kill yourself over all that...?

I heard that even prince Charles thought the joke was kinda funny.

I'm gonna enjoy watching the British media slander this joke knowing that at the same time they're green with jealousy that these two Austrailian DJ's got into that hospital before them.

They were not intending to get in. They were doing a prank call, because a lot of people do that. It was done as a joke, and they never intended to actually get details.

Wow, I actually listened to this live on my way home from work. I though it was pretty funny, especially since the nurse didn't realise something was up when they had people pretending to be corgis in the background. And she didn't even reveal much, just that Kate was asleep and had lost a lot of fluid if I remember correctly.

Anywhere this cannot the fault of the DJ's. The woman who committed suicide wasn't even the one who divulged Kate's condition, it was the receptionist who just patched them through to the ward. There is just no way someone who is the perfect picture of mental health would kill themselves over this.

Well Australia is part of the Commonwealth, making the Queen our head of state, so the Monarchy is relevant to us. Of course they have nearly no political influence here but there is still a large amount of people who love the royal family and go crazy whenever one of them decides to visit.

Thats the thing about jokes, when they get out of hand ... no one intends someone to get hurt but lets face it, this type of joke intended to have a victim (though not to be a victim of death, merely humiliation... the brunt of a joke).
What annoys me the most is when these types of joke get out of hand, the escuse is always the same... it was just a joke, having a laugh, never meant to hurt anyone.

People just dont seem to know where the limit is, many go overboard to get that big laugh... and the sad thing ? It will happen again.

Oh, and to those who say the nurse shouldnt of fallen for the call.
How many of you would recognise the Queen on a phone ? I wouldnt and I am British.
The nurse knew Kate was in hospital, its not impossible the Queen would of wanted to know how Kate was, the Queen doesnt always arrive with pomp and ceremony, add nerves and excitement at the prospect of speaking to the Queen... anyone could potentially make the same error.
The nurse would of probably figured career over, even if she didnt get fired the stigma would always remain... plus she probably got a lot of ribbing by her workmates, would of made going to work a miserable affair.

One final thought, was it intended to be merely a joke or was it fishing for more details disguised as a joke?
A lot of media interest about why Kate was in hospital, a lot of speculation as to when a baby would be coming.

wow, you have no empathy at all do you? "oh she was week-willed, so she would have killed herself sooner or later anyway" is not a good point. some people can't stand a huge public humiliation, the embarrassment and feeling of guilt for what she did could probably break a lot of people.

That being said I don't blame the DJ's who did this. Its a joke gone horribly wrong and I doubt they could have predicted or even imagined this outcome.

I would think that it was not the radio hosts but the hospital for giving her what ever punishment that drove her to kill herself.
That and guilt.
I am sure the radio hosts did not expect for the nurse to fall for the prank, so blaming them is a little off the point.
