I agree with the people talking about great things that have been done with books, but thats mostly because we've had thousands of years where books were essentially the only narrative medium. I don't think that makes them inherently a higher form of art. They are a higher form of art because far greater works have been created using the written word, but this does not make books by their very nature, a better medium. Both games and books have the potential to make great works of art, games just haven't done it yet.

There's a weird obssession with books in the western world. Nobody ever says "you should put down that novel and pick up a picasso!" but that would be really good advice.

I see what you are saying about being fair to the different forms of media.... but
Books also enhance the vocab. It's reading. I have yet to have a video game work on me the same way. And if anything can be done to help the youth sound less moronic in conversation (written and spoken), then I am all for it.

ps - then they would say you should put down that Picasso and sing an epic poem, preferably in the heroic hexameter.

Oh look, more inspid "Books > > > Games" nonsense.
I think the word you were looking for is 'insipid'. Or perhaps, you did that on purpose? Oh, capital!

Hard to disagree with him. I mean, he just wants to encourage parents not have their kids play video games all day long.
That's totally right, Barrack Obama is a good man, and he seems like a great president, even during this difficult economic time.

For the record I read when I'm either on or waiting for the train/ bus, and also at night when I'm having trouble sleeping.

I think people need to take this a little less seriously, he's not talking of banning our beloved games, just cut down a bit, he just mentions books because they can be very therapeutic for such a stimulated mind, like children's minds.

Too bad he is totally right.

Playing video games all day as a kid=increased weight, that is a fact [and this is coming from someone who has played video games his whole life].

EDIT:

I don't get this.

As others have said, why not say "Turn off the game and go outside?" Video games are hardly worse than books are. I would say get the kids some exercise instead of replacing sitting down in front of a TV for more sitting down.
Read the whole article, he actually has before.

It's not the first time Obama has discussed his nation's gaming habits. In 2009, he encouraged parents to get their kids to "step away from the video games and spend more time playing outside",

He's just frustrated with the Witcher 2 and said "fuck it, I'll read a book instead".

I'd prefer to hear: 'Turn off the shooters/sports/action etc games and put on an RPG'.

If there is a type of game which is most alike to books it's Role Playing Games.

Sir, I think I am outside of your demographic. But when I have kids, I will make them earn their play time and limit them to books and Bill Nye the Science Guy (that's how I got my head start in science).

Urg, I hate it when anyone gives me some pretenious speech about books being so freakin' great. Just because you prefer a specific medium for storytelling doesn't make it better. In fact the bright colours normally associated with kid games can actually help develop creativity - not to mention many multiplayer games promoting teamwork. I actually have the ability to do math's pretty quickly compared to others in my class at school - and I was the one who played the most games growing up.

There are countless logic puzzles in Zelda, a math's segment in Mischief Makers, brain training etc all made to reward smart and quick thinking. The horde of recent multiplayer games also pushes people to communicate better since team work is required for some multiplayer games to work at all. Theres also D'n'D games like Neverwinter Nights were it's possible and incredibly easy to work out the math's behind the game and use that knowledge to your advantage (such as working out your % chance to hit a foe).

Or I could pick up a book and spend 10 minutes just having the scene described to me. Maybe theres a reason why kids prefer one format over the other. What's more is that most books (far worse than games) tend to be repetative, cliche and just plain stupid in some cases. Despite what many people think being an author doesn't automatically make you smart - it just means you got published.

When I read "classics" such as Catcher in the Rye or Dracula I actually find the books dull, contradictory and just being silly. If people actually read the Dracula book they would see quite easily that by modern day standards it's just the plot to a crappy horror movie. Or Catcher in the Rye - where you can read about an Asshole being an Asshole and then complaining when no one likes him while he talks about random crap not actually relevent to the story. While some may disagree with me you the Lord of the Ring's movies where actually better than book (I can't count the number of times Frodo and Sam didn't look like they could make it over that next bit of terrian...then they did....yay?)

Why does buying a book come with a free superiority complex and a need to put down other mediums? Well-read must be latin for "Idiot".

Mr Obama, I read books every single day from ages 9-20.

I'm ostensibly an adult now. Time for some games.
