Dear Obama. I read more than you do each year, your argument is invalid.
Something makes me doubt that if you include all the drafts of laws and stuff he has to read.

I am a gamer.

I have read:
Fight Club
Haunted
Choke
Long Hard Road Out of Hell
The Light Fantastic
The Colour of Magic
Mort
Equal Rites
Sorcery
The fellowship of the Ring
The hobbit
The God Delusion
The Philosopher's Stone
Chamber of Secrets
Prisoner of Azkaban
Goblet of Fire
Order of the Phoenix
Romeo and Juliet
MacBeth
And I'm currently reading Eric

Maybe he should be targeting Jocks rather than Nerds.

Then again Obama has shown his ignorance by supporting Argentina's claim to the Falklands (Islands that have been British for almost 200 years, first claimed by France, then Britain, then Spain (who purchased an island from France)), despite the island's population wanting to remain British.

Wow, these comments are hilarious.

For one thing, he's not saying that video games are evil and that books are the only way to be smart. Anyone who read the quote would be able to gather that he was talking about how fathers should be playing a role in their children's lives and anyone could tell you that reading books is probably "better for you" intellectually than playing video games. And yeah, you could through a Professor Layton or 999 his way and say that a lot of video games do have you reading, but he's probably more talking about the Call of Duties and Gears of Wars that are, let's be honest, a waste of time in the long run.

And those saying why doesn't he address obesity? He has. The article clearly says that "n 2009, he encouraged parents to get their kids to 'step away from the video games and spend more time playing outside'".

If you really think that he's evil or wrong by telling parents they should encourage their children to play less video games and read books and go outside, you're trying too hard.

EDIT: And if you can play video games, read books, and spend time outdoors, more power to you. You aren't what he was talking about. You guys are trying to defend yourselves from a statement that was aimed at other people.

I guess I agree with him at a certain level. Reading is important, but I don't see how gaming is supposed to be the opposite to reading/education. I would argue that people who spend most their time playing football, rowing or shopping face the exact same problem. It has nothing to do with games, it's the lack of balance. Spending all your time on your education would be equally bad though, because people risk ending up socially inadequate.
It's a pity that video games are often blamed for things like distraction from education or not spending enough time outside.
Such an easy target, and not even fair.

its more offensive to say "you're fat" than "You're dumb" despite a vast number of people filling both roles splendidly all across this nation
rather proving the second point, wouldn't you say?
our species exists purely because we are a few iq points above everything else it amuses me how people worry so much what they look like and how little thought they put into what makes them who they are and the amazing feats that can be accomplished using our unique abilities

How about some physical activity as well? Considering the problem with obesity in the country I'm surprised he didn't say that instead.
its more offensive to say "you're fat" than "You're dumb" despite a vast number of people filling both roles splendidly all across this nation, i blame the P-C Movement myself, people used to have thick skin now everybody bitches about so called emotional abuse or some such nonsense.

on topic though:
I'm currently reading three different books, and playing two different games(PC and console)
Im also holding down a job and going to college for a BA or BS or whatever the acronym for bachelors is
The B means Bachelors. BA is Bachelor's of Art, and BSc is Bachelor's of Science.

Politicians say lots of inconsequential things, this is one of them. If parents aren't actively supporting reading in their childs life, they should be, but I doubt they're not because they were waiting to be instructed to do so by the president. However, this will affect a number of people for a temporary period of time, in so much that parents who weren't initially pushing any reading on their children might for a while do so in an overbearing, excessive, irritating and insincere manner, forcing their children to read things they would never read themselves. It'll be transient however. Maybe some of those children will readily take on reading despite the poor introduction.

It'll wash over most people though, and those children who are sat in front of CoD every night, probably still will be. Hopefully they have a better taste in games overall than I'm giving them credit for, but that would be optimism.

Should be parents put down that book and pickup that controller.

Having parents intrested in what thier children are doing will help their relationship.

He is probably too stupid to play Witcher 2 he got as a gift recently from the Polish prime minister.

Yeah kids, go read comic books instead.
If hes so stupid how'd he become the president then...?
Not to mention, how exactly did he get accepted to both Columbia and Harvard Law School...?

I'll assume this is aimed at young (pre-teen) children and i must agree with him. By getting kids interested in reading at a young age you can improve their literacy, creative thought, inquisitiveness, etc. all of which will benefit them later in life. We also know that young kids who play a lot of video games have the attention span of a gnat, by cutting down on the amount of game time it could help with this problem and improve academic levels in the US, which i hear are a bit pants.

As an added advantage it might keep the 12 year olds off CoD

Why did you stop at FotR?

And for that matter Order of the Phoenix?

I am very much in favour of the Pratchett though! I recommend Small Gods and Guards! Guards!. Also, "The Greatest Show on Earth" for more by Dawkins.

I read about 5 hours a day at least so I'm good, but the message is good and he doesn't bash video games so I don't have a problem with it nor should I. As a country we really do need to read more it won't hurt us. (but don't let anyone tell you that books don't bite, THAT IS A LIE!!!)

Give me a decent book to read which I haven't already read and sure why not. I usually do if I find a book that interests me. Not that any of the books I read are less violent/fantasy than the video-games I play.

And while you're at it, stop watching herp and listen to derp Music!

Stop watching derps and make a herp!

Stop herping and go look at derpings!

Because as we all know, when a totally unqualified thread poster makes wild assumptions as to the meaning of a presidential quote he is automatically right.

Because that is Exactly what the president said

Dear president Obama. I'm fairly sure I've read more books than you have, despite being half your age. I'm also pretty sure they covered a broader range of topics than you did. I'm also a dedicated gamer. So up yours.

Sincerely
Jandau

Once again, he proves that he's a total fucking retard. I'm sorry Obama, you'll get just as fat and lethargic from sitting around reading all day (probably more so). And if we're going to talk about educational value, are you really going to tell me that games like Portal can't teach? It's like he's going out of his way to piss off as many people as possible...
