Oblivion came out 4 YEARS AGO?!

I just saw an article talking about Elder Scrolls 5 rumours, which made me realise: it's been 4 years since Oblivion was released.

I remember when it was released, it was one of the greatest games people had ever seen. The freedom that you had, and the various characters you saw on your travels. Sure, the facial animations weren't up to scratch and it aged badly, but you have to admit the first time you ever saw Cyrodiil it filled you with awe.

It's just hard to believe it was released that long ago. Between then and now we have had two new consoles, the Gears of War series, the conclusion to the Halo trilogy, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, both Modern Warfares, and many many other great games.

Just so hard to believe my first steps out of the Imperial Sewers occurred 4 years ago.

Pretty long time, eh?

But then, you stop for a moment and realise that Half Life 2 came out SIX years ago.

Time flies when you're playing awesome games.

Yeah, I've accumulated 400 hours on it over those 4 years.

It takes more time to craft an RPG than an action story. I'd rather they filled TESV with more side quests than bring it out earlier.

So you're having a gaming mid-life crisis?

"I can't believe my game is this old!"

Although it isn't very old now, is it? 4 years is not a long time.

It's been a whole decade since the PS2 came out! Is that not even more shocking?

Though, I find it funny, when Oblivion was being hinted at, how everybody was saying it was like the best graphics of all time. That changed fast. VERY fast.

Still, when the PS2 came out, I remember there were people saying how great the graphics were. Some people saying the PS3 when it comes out will probably look like real life.

It made me realize that the rate at which the graphics of games increases is starting to slow down as Half life 2 came out 6 years ago, but it hardly looks dated compared to todays graphics, but if you compare it to half life, which came out 6 years earlier, there's a huge graphical difference.

Personally I think this is a good thing, the graphics race is killing a lot of the creativity in mainstream games as publishers mostly fund "safe" games.

This fact worries me the most as I can remember going to bbuy it and all the complaining everyone was doing because they had to connect to the internet to register it and you're also forced to download and run Steam to be able to play it. Considering all the love Steam now gets, I still find that funny.

I remember opening the box and placing it in, tears nearly welling after the glories of morrowind. Then after 5 hours of playing i wanted to snap it in half because it was a hollow shell of its predecessors.
I am still haunted by its pre-Shivering Isles monotony

It's an odd world, isn't it?
I remember that very same sequence of events, but I must say, I love Steam, and so does everyone else I know.
Episode 3 is going to be a blast, I can just tell. I don't even care if it isn't out for another three years, it will just be brilliant.

Oblivion is as old and outdated now as Morrowind was when Oblivion was released. Except that Morrowind is still the better game.

The best moment of Oblivion on the 360 for me was when I found out that some speed up spell worked on horses. I loaded the horse up so with so much go fast juice that the terrain flew by. I got the loading message every few seconds then after while the console crashed.

single player games haven't got any better tbh. been replaying it other week, doesn't feel aged to me, go play morrowind... (its horrible).

WTB TES 5 already ffs, people need to copy them, we need 10 times more sandbox role playing shooters.

One day I'll get to finishing the story of this game :p
Same :p

I only bought it a few months ago, did all the side quests, became head of every guild, and then got bored of the story around about the point where you go through your...third Oblivion portal? I think, anyway. I'll get around to it sometime, but my problem is that it's so repetitive - you do one dungeon and you've done them all. I got to the point where I'd walk in, cast nighteye and invisibility, then sneak up behind everyone for a 1-hit kill. Of course, most of the time I didn't even bother killing them. I'd go invisible, run to get whatever trinket I had to get, and run back again.

Fun game and all, but it just went on for too long, when you factor in all the guild nonsense. Which was actually far more fun than the main storyline.

I was shocked to realise next year will be the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Wonder what SEGA will do to comemorate the event. 10th anniversary brought us Sonic Adventure 2, which was damn epic.

Even after 6 years, I'm still very wary of it and only buy games on Steam if the packaged game has Steamworks lumped with it.

OT: I got Oblivion when it was first released after really enjoying Morrowind and I never really enjoyed it. It was a fun enough game, but it was far too open for my tastes.

Ok, now I'm going to cry. I remember being the first person in my school to play it by at least 6 months as I managed to get my hands on a US import copy.

Let's see...4,000 hours...carry the two...multiply by...1,000 per year.

But yeah. Oblivion is old now.

But...how about this...Windows 95 came out 15 years ago!

Wow.. Pokemon, I think, was the first game I ever played. I was only 6 when it came out, I remember being the first kid in school to get it, ahh fun times. Haven't played it in 10 years...... Was thinking about picking up this new one.
Any good? What is it?
