Also I think co-operative doesn't mean you can play with 40 people, but just with one other person to co-operate with. Yes, a five man group still co-operates, the way they do that is entirely different though.
Cooperation doesn't imply certain numbers of other people, and you don't play "with" 40 other people in an MMO, I should know, I play one. I'd recommend mine (DDO) but it's more hub-based so you don't get quite as much open exploration as you do with, say, LotRO. My guild leader and I can 2-man any quest in DDO apart from raids, and we do--that's how we level rapidly most of the time, because pugs are erratic. And part of the fun in DDO is making it so your character can be self-sufficient. Due to the number of build options in DDO, you really CAN build characters that can do just about everything (except fulfill some of the ultra-specific raid roles) if that's what you really want to do. But a DPS-healer-tank is not that difficult to build if you want to sink time into it.

The game is designed for whatever you want to do with it; witness the guy who capped a character in WoW without killing anything or finishing any quests. Oh, and Oblivion has a bunch of "kill 5 things because they bug me" quests, too. Not as many as WoW, but Oblivion doesn't have as many quests as WoW, PERIOD.

Oblivion had gobs of imbecile dialog and horrible voice acting, too, not to mention the persuasion pie you had to feed people. :p DDO actually has better writing in many spots (even though a lot of the writing in DDO is still HORRIBLE) and also benefits for putting your points into "social" skills.

Now, if you're looking for a game where you can level up your character by standing in the middle of the street and casting nighteye 5000 times, no, you probably won't find an MMO for that. If you're looking for a big open sandbox to explore where you can hang out with other people if you choose, most MMO's will fit the bill quite nicely.

Did I say something wrong for stating that the guy who wants an Oblivion-esque game does not want an MMO?
You don't need to lecture me about any massively multiplayer online mechanics, I've got my share of them. I played them for long enough. You'd need a very specific class to be able to heal, deal out DPS and have lots of hp. Mostly druids in WoW come to mind. Because a Warrior will most definitely not heal anyone, ever. Rogues won't, either. Or Mages. Also the guys who can tank and heal and deal damage will not be very good at either of these roles, wheras in Oblivion, the guy can be a badass in everything. That's just how the game skill system works. I haven't played Dungeons And Dragons Online and I do not doubt that given time, the character can be really powerful in all aspects, but do you really think the guy who is looking for more Oblivion-style games is interested in Dungeons&Dragons skill systems in any way?

But do you need to tell me that Oblivion is the most boring game I played in decades? No, it is. Just about everything from Bethesda in the last 5 years was not worthy playing in my opinion. Gamebryo is completely outdated and the animation quality is about on par with indie titles from five years ago. That and the story is just uninteresting.

Now, to get this threat somehow back onto what it was originally about.
I am not looking for any game or advice on them here, this is not about what I want or think about games. The OP is looking for a game that is like Oblivion, but with co-operative game play. I still doubt that an MMO can be classified as that.
Maybe I'll check out DDO though, almost done with The Witcher and I could use a time sink again.

Yes--if you want to say "well, I don't think most MMO's are actually much like Oblivion", sure, say that. But don't *tell* him what he wants. He might enjoy an MMO depending on what aspects of Oblivion he liked. I'd assume that he wasn't all that into the story and dialog if he's looking to play co-op, because those are the aspects that always suffer the most when you're chatting along with one of your buddies while you're playing.

I enjoyed Oblivion and I love D&D, been playing it for 20 years. Not everybody is wedded to a certain style of mechanical skill system. Dungeon Siege is very different from Oblivion. So is Two Worlds.

I'd recommend Gothic (it's a bit retro, but still quite enjoyable), but unfortunately it's not co-op. Arcanum could be fun if you want to to REALLY retro, but the co-op part is kind of meh. Neverwinter Nights has its moments, although you have to look online for decent co-op modules.
