On one hand Morrowind has a much better designed, exotic, varied and interesting world than Oblivion, on the other Oblivion has much better gameplay mechanics for combat, spell casting and so on.

Reading what everyone has posted seems to show two trends:
If you liked Morrowind, you were let down by Oblivion,
If you liked Oblivion, you probably did not like Morrowind and felt lost in it and gave up soon after starting.

So does this mean that although the games are sequels, and the same genre, they seem to appeal too two different groups of players. Oblivion did hold your hand very much through the entire game, but as a result there was a massive reduction in content compared to Morrowind. Where as Morrowind just through the player into game and left the player to do what they felt like.

Maybe this shows how the gaming audience has changed as modern players want to be led around, where as the older players want to be left to their own devices as this is what we have been used to ( An example that comes to mind is the FF series and how the world map disappeared from FF X onwards).

I kind of hate morrowind. Bought it a couple of weeks ago, and it was kind of shitty. The combat sucked reeeeeally bad. It gets pretty unimmersive when you get beaten up by an old lady because you can't stab her to death with your knife

Think of it this way: atleast the old lady from morrowind didn't level up with you.

I liked Morrowind more, as it is late and I can't find my long winded answer in my previous posts I'll leave it at that.

I never use Oblivion fast travel, but I still feel it just takes too long to get anywhere in Morrowind. Couldn't figure out where to go when I first started. I just wanted to find a point of reference and get my bearings, but I was completely lost and stuck trekking long distances over landscape far less interesting than Oblivion's at a fraction of Oblivion's pace.

Also combat was a pain, and enemies spawned too much. Perhaps Oblivion is dumbed down a little, but I think it's found a pretty good balance. You still have to level smartly (unless you just set all your class to skills you never use) and it is the best sandbox game I've ever played.

I just hope TES:5 won't be made too simple.

I almost forgot that! :O That sucked about Oblivion! Didn't feel super-strong at all even at the highest level.

I loved how huge Morrowind felt. There were items that were hand placed and hidden. The cities and towns looked way better and the story was just great. It had a lot of diversity, unlike Oblivion. Morrowind also had better spells and actually made you think twice before going somewhere because you would most likely have to walk all the way back.

I love Oblivion, but it was just too empty in between cities and the main quest was just too short, but Morrowind gave me a better experience.

Just level up to lvl 2, so you can get all the best weapons and never sleep again after that. Keep grinding your skills though. Vanilla Oblivion has no gameplay once you figure out how it works.

Supposed you really wanted to do all quests you could also play against the majors, which is a bit of a rough start, but works well otherwise.

What would be nice to see, a remake of Morrowind into Oblivion's engine, but I doubt we'll see that.
There is a mod for Oblivion that is meant to be a re-make of Morrowind

http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/

That should give you some info. Not tried it though.

You shouldn't. If your at the highest level and the enemies are still level 1 then there will be no challenge and the game would be boring.

I rather disliked Morrowind but thats because I wanted to kill stuff with a sword and not hit something with a sword every fifth hit.

Yes and no. Yes because of the ridiculously high standard it had to achieve in the wake of Morrowind and no because its graphics and combat systems made Morrowind look like shit.

Yes, but then those enemies who were high level when you were level 1 are supposed to give you challenge.

I think that Morrowind was the greatest video game created by human hands. It truly feels like you're being dumped off in some strange place with nothing more than a name and address to do with what you may. While it was decidely less player-friendly thats one thing I loved about it! Obliion does too much hand-holding, Morrowind just tells you what to do and makes you figure it out on your own. There is also the fact that it is much larger with so much more to do. So many quests and easter eggs that I've had the game for five years and I haven't found them all! And I think that makes for a pretty awesome game.

Oblivion was a huge improvement over Morrowind. Morrowind had just really, really lame quests. The one saving grace was the interesting location.
