Oblivion, I think I love you again!

I recently bought Elder Scrolls IV on Steam, now I already own the game on the 360 and while I did enjoy it, I felt that mods could reinvigorate what is fundamentally a great game.

I was surprised by how good it would be. Don't like enemies leveling to you? Get an overhaul mod like Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, no more bandits in daedric armour! Don't like the crappy HUD and menus system? There's a mod for that! Race mods, body mods, armour mods, my female assassin actually looks like a woman, not an ape! There's a mod that adds new landmarks to the world, it no longer feels like a copy and paste forest! I am thoroughly enjoying the game, more than I ever did on the 360.

So, fellow escapists, regale me with your tales of games you liked that were vastly improved by a good modding community.

Well I got back into Fallout 3 after downloading 4gb worth of mods, only to have my file erased. I got so mad that a deleted the game and all the mods. About a month or two after that, I found my file again, but it was in a random music folder. Really strange, and I sure as shit didn't move it there.

Morrowind was the same way. The mods for that are mind boggling in quality and quantity. Also, the mods for ArmA 1 and 2 are pretty amazing.

I'm so jealous of you I cannot even say. My PC is old. It sometimes fantasizes about playing these games.

You should try Fallout 3 as well. I have heard it has many fantastic mods.

Max Payne 2 has so many mods, from simple re-skins of weapons to entirely new levels and gameplay, that it's pretty hard to not find one you like.

I started a thread a while back actually. Quite a few suggestions here.

I love Oblivion it is and always will be one of my favourite games ever. I only have it on 360 at the moment though but when i get my new PC i'm definatly buying it off steam for PC because i have played Morrowind on the Xbox and PC and it was far more enjoyable on the PC with fun mods and i expect Oblivion to be the same.

It's totally worth it. I got the GotY edition for what? £15? Well worth it, just for the amount of customisation you add to your game.

I have to say that:
Oblivion - Favourite game of all time.
Fallout 3 - 2nd

So its quite clear what I like, but still I've only ever played them on PS3 and I so want to play them on PC for the mods..

I keep trying to convince myself that they are fine on PS3, for various reasons (Such as Gamepad > Mouse and keyboard) ect.

So convince me :) how much better are they on Pc?

Oblivion has an awesome modding community, although there are a lot of tastless body mods, skimpy armours and sex mods. However, there are some great mods out there, like Adonnays Elven Weaponry and TESNexus has probably got the biggest collection. I recommend getting Oblivion Mod Manager though, makes everything much easier.

It is too bad it requires a bit of fiddling, but oblivion can reach Morrowind like qualities, especially with oscuro's overhaul mod. Also, no more power leveling required, thank god. I hope for whatever next elder scrolls game they make, they'll completely remove that system. In a game where you level by using, I do not want to think about which skill I should be leveling.

In terms of control, I'd agree, a joypad is much better. In terms of things you can add? There's pretty much a mod for anything. For instance, my assassin is a race called a Moonshadow elf, she has white hair and red eyes. She also wears the same armour that Ezio wears in Assassin's Creed 2. One of the things that ruined the console versions for me was the leveling system. Not the system istelf, just the way enemies leveled to you, you never had any real sense of growth. There's a mod that keeps the same level system, slows it down a bit and then basically gives every enemy in the game a level. Some dungeons will be easy, others will kick your arse. So there is required grind, but the good kind.

I'll paint you a picture.

I was in Vilvein (probably not correct spelling), the first dungeon you can see when you leave prison. I worked my way through it, avoiding groups of enemies that I know I couldn't beat. I finally got to the necromancer at the end of the dungeon. I knew I couldn't beat him, so I quickly stole items from his chest. He spotted me, I quickly ran out of the dungeon, with the mage close on my heels, throwing spell after spell at me. I lead him up onto a main road patrolled by Imperial Legion (Oscuro's mod adds more guards to patrol routes), where the mage was swiftly dispatched by the legion. I then proceeded to loot his corpse and run off to my next adventure.

This is usually how people feel with games where you can alter the game play though, I felt the same way with Fallout 3. Changing anything I wanted was quite awesome. You can play the game at the surface, beat it, then mod it for a completely different experience! It's really awesome. :)

You get your mods from TES Nexus I take it?
Yeah, I use TES Nexus. There are plenty of shit mods, but it's worth searching for the golden ones.

You're looking at the biggest Oblivion fan on this site apart from Onyx Oblivion and maybe a few others.
I don't use mods, I have it for 360. But I do love it, and The Shivering Isles and Dark Brotherhood were two epic storylines.

Stalker is vastly improved by mods, and the modding community for valve games is awesome
