So I bought Oblivion friday (late to the party, I know) because I was looking forward to Skyrim without ever playing a Elder Scroll game. I figured I'd check it out before I paid for Skyrim.
In short, I hate it. The combat is wierd. Why don't enimies has health bars? And whats up the with leveling system? I don't get expirience from killing things? You're telling me I can level up by increasing my acrobatics skill 10 times?
And why is it SO hard? I'm at the FIRST Oblivion gate! It's impossible. I got there at level 2 (because it's the second fukin mission) and now I'm level 4 and still can't come close to beating it. I have a iron bow and steel arrows, and a "fine steel longsword" I'm Aprentice in Archery and Blade. Why do people like this game? I think it will be the first game I give up on due to difficulty in years. Atleast I only spent $20 bucks on it.
Edit: Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. I was going to give another shot anyway, but for sure I'm going to lower the difficulty. Apparently archery sucks and or requires too much stratgie. I'll still to my blades and forget about archery all together. Does anyone know if there is a follower that could help me out this early?

Turn down the difficulty, the game can be a bit unbalanced so just turn it down, it will make it more enjoyable.
Also you do get experience from a lot of things, including killing things, that's as long as the skill for whatever weapon you're using is a major skill of yours.

If you're playing the PC version, I suggest, foremost, to install the OblivionXP mod. It makes it so the levelling system IS based on killing things instead of skill-grinding. It really made the game better for me.

I get what you mean, the initial hump is a real ***** the first time around, the first time I did it I had to turn it down. Just turn it down and ease into it some more, you'll change your mind pretty quickly once you get into the game proper.

1. The enemies have health bars, it's that curved line above your crosshairs.
Such an amazing numbered list you have there. :p

Yeah, the guy is right. They have health bars. As for the difficulty, just turn it down. It isn't that hard if you just turn it down a couple notches.

Sounds like you won't much like Skyrim.

Mod vanilla Oblivion into the dust. Then it's pretty good.

Lol, I'm one of the few people who loves vanilla Oblivion I guess.

I hate the mods.

Even after all these years, I still play with the difficulty slightly below the default! Although I do find it rather easy... It just takes a while to get used to the system, and it's important to make a character that suits your playstyle.

Adjust the difficulty settings, you can make it so easy that you one shot everything.

If you're playing on PC, there are mods for your complaints. Deadly Reflex changes the combat completely, it's more dynamic and fluid, there are other combat mods that you can try out as well. There are mods that adjust the levelling system too, off the top of my head I'd recommend the realistic levelling mod.

If you're playing on console, then unlucky I guess. The original combat system really does feel outdated.

EDIT: Just posted and saw you're on console.

Turn down Difficulty, I had the same problem on Xbox but after I did that I found the game very enjoyable.
40 Hours of enjoyment in one character.

I always play it with the slider all the way down to extremely easy. Why? Because then I feel like a goddamn god of war. I like the feeling of complete invincibility more than the feeling of a challenge. Just have the same mindset and enjoy your unstoppable killing spree vs Cyrodiil.
