So, thanks to the Steam sales, I've picked up the GOTY version of Oblivion. Hence my problem: I have already finished the XBOX version. 100% finished. Even the nirnroots. Especially the nirnroots.

Aaanyway, what I'm looking for is some advice from the PC gamers as to what mods to get. Not just the boring "oh this one fixes a couple errors", or "there was a quest here, now you can have it!" ones. I want the psych-ward insane ones. The mods that for 5 seconds in-game effort result in months of hysterical laughter.

Do midgets fly across towns? That's a promising direction. Fatigue system? Bleh. I want the absolute surrealistic Oblivion experience that's so out there, Sheogorath would think it were insane. Escapists, do your worst.

Deadly Reflexes can be pretty cool. It certainly ups the violence and gore, which can be funny in itself.

Don't know of any uber-insanity ones.

Have you tried looking here:

http://www.tesnexus.com/

You'll need to join the site (which is free) to download anything over 2MB (which for Oblivion is most things- it's a rule of the site that hasn't been updated since it was a Morrowind mod site), but I don't think there is a better Oblivion mods site around than that one.

Here's a list of the top 10 best mods: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?id=41&view=Articles.Detail obviously there are more mods now than in 2006, but that should get you started.

I read about one in PC Gamer a few years ago which adds a load of funny monsters, one of which is a Cheese Golem, so I think if you type that into Google, you might get something (by the way, just so you know what you're looking for, it's a thing made out of lots of wheels of cheese, just in case).

Few mods make the game surreal in and of themselves. There are plenty of them that will turn your Medieval European Fantasy game into a Hentai game in short order however, at least in terms of character models, armors and weapons. Seriously - it appears people obsessed with various Anime products also love producing content for Oblivion. The majority of the armor, weapon and character model content seems to be of this style.

In terms of things that aren't garbage, Deadly Reflex is the most notable mod out there. It doesn't dramatically change anything but it does go a fair distance towards making combat an interesting endeavor. The latest version was actually quite good. There is one mod who's name I forget (it tends to be the top rated mod on tesnexus) that does a similar overhaul of the magic system.

There are also plenty of mods that turn Oblivion into a hardcore explicit sex game.

In terms of bulk content, you are really out of luck there. Things like Marts Monster Mod dramatically changes the monster distribution in the landscape and plenty of people add stuff to dungeons but it is a rare mod that actually introduces new dungeons into the game. Well, new dungeons that actually fit in the world that is.

So, if you want a game that is entirely different, perhaps seek out all the mods by Colorwheel on texnexus. And add his/ (possibly her) recommendations as you go. The game does not fundamentally change in how it operates but the tone certainly changes.

I don't know... some of those look dangerously sensible...

I think it would work, as long as it makes no sense whatsoever. "Suspension of Disbelief? What's that?" Got any strange ones?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, there's definitely some hilarity potential there...

...Yeah, let's not go there.

While one bulk mod would be easier, lots of little ones would have the same effect, yes? Besides, dungeons that are completely out of place sounds interesting. A Vault-TEC vault that opens up to the crew deck of the Normandy? Sounds interesting.

Thanks for the tip!

I installed Elsweyr: The Desert Of Anequina about a week ago. It adds an ENTIRE NEW PROVINCE, insanely awesome. It's still a work in progress, but it's got new big cities, fully scripted NPC's, new quests, items, landscapes, architecture, flora. I'm completely in awe. With some polishing, it could easily be an official expansion.

I haven't actually played this mod myself, though I plan to... at some point. Anyway, I've heard a lot of good things about it, it's a total conversion mod, called Nehrim, converting the entire game into another world with different gameplay and the like. All of this is assuming you actually want to play that kind of stuff, or if you're only going for Elder Scrolls stuff. Anyway, if you like it, here's the link:
