So Oblivion is one of the few good games I regret never passing, and seeing as how there is a lot of time between now and the next game I'm interested, I decided to revisit it. The first time I tried to go through it I played it on x box, this time I wanna play it on PC, since I hear it is way better, mainly because of mods.

So I was wondering if anyone can recommend anything in particular, I'm not looking for anything that breaks the game or that makes it easier, just things that make it more fun and better to play.

Before I start, learn to use the oblivion mod manager, and also install the oblivion script extender. OBMM and OBSE are all but required for all but the most simple addons. I'll let someone else explain them as I've done it recently in a thread with this exact same title. I don't want to have to do it again.

anything that increases the textures and makes the game look better is good

Anything that makes the map prettier is good

The Unofficial Oblivion Patch mod is important, and if you want Obscuro's Oblivion Mod, it's a good mod.. but it changes the game a bit too much for my liking.

There are lots of mods that do those two things, and I don't remember off the top of my head.

For adjusting the level up system to not be abusive to those who actually want to use their Major Skills, I suggest S.P.A.M.. It makes it so you can set your level up bonuses as static numbers, instead of being based on your skill use.

Another mod I like is the Ayeleid Well mod.. it basically turns the Ayeleid Wells into permanent Magicka bonuses.. with an extra bonus if you find them all. Gives the game an extra "collect them all" minigame that I really like.

Another important addon, if you play a thief type character is "No Psychic Guards". It does what it says, it makes it so that guards will not notice you if you are properly sneaked.

Another Important Addon is the levelled quest rewards.. Basically allowing you to complete quests at your leisure, without having to wait until you're high level before finishing them to get the best rewards.

I also like addons that fix the archery, by speeding up the arrows... There are addons that can improve the speed of the arrow depending on the quality of the arrow.. so more powerful arrows are also faster.. it makes sniping a lot more entertaining.

Another good edition is to change Night Eye.. I love the Night Eye spell, but I hate the blue color. You can get different addons that change it in different ways. Also, if you choose to play a Khajiit, there are addons that make their Night Eye racial Toggled rather then a timed cast, and also another addon that makes it automatic if you go into a dark area... it makes it a bit more authentic, but I found the game was a poor judge of when Night Eye was required.

TesNexus.com will be your friend if you want Oblivion or Morrowind mods. Check it out, it has everything from nude mods(if you're into that) to epic campaigns that add hours of great gameplay.

OH YEAH

the addon that makes it so boxes and barrels actually open up, and makes herbs change when you collect them..

I forget what it's called, but it was vital for my enjoyment.

I've never played Oblivion, but everytime I read a thread like this, it really comes across as if the devs fucked up hardcore and the playerbase had to come along and fix what was wrong with it so they could enjoy it.

I have to admit. Whenever there's a nude mod to be had, I will download it.

midas magic, lost paladins of the divines, cm partners, and deadly reflex mods (all can be found on tesnexus) in my opinion they gave oblivion the stuff i found it needed

tes construction set is great, if im bored i will just make wars between types of monsters just for fun, it is a little hard to figure out when you first get it but it is worth the time figuring it out when u can make quests and stuff. the cs goes together with photoshop, allowing you to make retextures of almost anything

Oh, lord. My mod list was insanely long... its hard to nail down what I consider the "best of the bunch".

If your system can handle the load, BetterCities or OpenCities is definitely worth it. Everything about the feel of the different cities is improved.

If you play a rogue-type, there are some mod choices for secret entries into towns, as well. Nothing worse than being forced to pass by guards who have an unhealthy desire to separate your appendages from the rest of your body.

Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is one of several good choices for combat and leveling changes. Bhowever, they're all pretty extensive, so I suggest doing your research on what you really want.

I also played with several realism mods running, so that encumbrance was a real issue, as was fatigue and hunger/thirst. But, there was nothing like surviving a fight because I was able to simply "wear out" my opponent through a bit of strategy and stamina-draining trickery. (Of course, forgetting to stock up on supplies and end up either leaving valuable loot behind, or face a VERY long gasping crawl back towards town, really sucked sometimes.)

What's this mod manager and script extender that he's talking about? Where do you find them?

Three more that deserve a mention:

Alternate Start [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11495], which lets you change your background to something other than "Amnesiac Death-Row Inmate."

DarNified UI [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10763], which pretty much shrinks all the text so more of it can fit on the menus at once.

Martigen Monster Mod [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14442], which adds new monsters (and variations on old monsters).

The mod manager (OBMM) is here. [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097] I found it pretty easy to use, but then I'd had some experience with Fallout 3's as well.

The script extender (OBSE) is here. [http://obse.silverlock.org/] Which version you need depends on the version of Oblivion you have running.

That's... not far from the truth. I look at Oblivion (and to a lesser extent Fallout 3) as a foundation to be built off of. It's an excellent foundation... but not really a complete house.

Good mods listed here already. That should get you started. I had about 45 mods installed last time I played. On a good PC, you can make it the most beautiful game there is.
