Just slide the difficulty down a few notches if you don't want to grind all your minor skills.
That really works.

Shit. You can use the basic Flare on everything and still win with it all the way down.

The horrid levelling system is what finally made me stop playing Oblivion, when I found myself spending the majority of time sneaking around the upper floor of one of the Mage's Guild buildings at night than actually playing the damn game. The monster scaling I suspect I could have lived with if the levelling system wasn't so horrible. As an aside, the other thing that stopped me playing was the fact that it would crash 9 times out of 10 if I alt+tabbed out and back in, which I do regularly when playing games on my PC.

Part of the reason I'm yet to try Morrowind is because I'm worried the levelling system will be too similar. Is that right or not?
Similar leveling...no scaling though.

That's fine with me...seeing as I love the leveling system and scaling now.

I'll never use a overhaul mod in Oblivion. Ever. All I add are quest mods, really.

Every time I play Oblivion, I reach a point where I get utterly bored and know that I don't want to play anymore. So I slide the difficulty way up, strip my character naked and run around a city trying to take out people with my fists. Then I die and put in a different game.

I've have like 8 different characters that I've put in at least 30 hours with, but I've only finished the main story once. Those Oblivion gates are just so boring and harsh on the eyes. I always hear the PC people say mods extend the life of the game a bit. Maybe you should try that (unless you're on a console, like me)?

I feel the same way. Oblivion is a game that has so many millions of problems, and yet somehow just seems to work for me. So much about it has me tearing my hair out, and yet I've really enjoyed playing it.

I have to really be in the mood for Oblivion- I've played it through start to finish three times, but I've started it a lot more than that.
I think that's the only thing that keeps me going with it and allows me to overlook all it's faults- just being in that Oblivion zone. I think that zone is a land of pointless time-wasting and the desire to commit many, many, many burglaries for me.

It's my on/off game as well, I'm getting the urge to play it again but I don't want to get sucked in again...And most likely disappointed 'cause I've done it all before!

I realize I'm asking a bit much here, I guess, but unless it's something I can do on the vanilla version, it's not something I can do period. I don't game on the PC, nor can I.

No fast travel and the like are great suggestions.

Try returning to Morrowind but with the mainland mods applied (and the graphical ones) maybe? Not sure how far the volunteers ever got with those though.

Mods.
Mods are the answer to everything.
If you are not playing on the PC then guess what?
You're fucked.
I realize mods are fantastic, but they're not the end-all. I had fun with plenty of games in their vanilla-est.

I'm sure there are optimal class layouts and/or suggestions. Hell, I never even did Shivering Isles...
You do know that the complaints you make about the game, the ones that turn you off are easily fixable by mods?
Just get OOO

Honestly, and you're going to hate me for this: I haven't even finished Oblivion. I had to do absolutely EVERYTHING in it with the same character.
I have the same problem... I still haven't finished it yet. About 3 months ago I decided that it would be a good idea to start the game over as a different character/race/class/everything. And then deleted my old game, where I STILL hadn't finished it. Someday I will get through it, but I find myself not being able to play for more than an hour or so in one sitting before I have to play something else. But I haven't played it in at least 2 months now due to my schedule and trying to finish AC:B for the first time and Mass Effect for the 3rd time in preparation for ME 3.

Part of it is due to the leveling system making the monster battles take forever each time. And then I try to complete every quest and find every thing that I can. Plus I avoid the fast travel system as much as possible.

And I haven't even gone back into the Shivering Isles yet... (facepalm)
