Lots of health potions (given that you're playing on default or higher) you'll encounter tonnes of monsters so health potions or high speed attribute is what i recommend.

First time I played Oblivion I didn't know there was a fast travel until I was nearly finishing the main story line.

I started reading the instruction manuals after that.

Alright, pro-tip:

Don't fast travel. Bam. There. Done.

On a related note, I played through a 100% game of Red Dead Redemption without ever realizing that quick traveling was an option. It was excruciating. I don't suggest it.

I once read a Let's Play sort of blog called Nodrick's Nonadventure where the player did something similar to what you are planning except trying to play the game as an NPC which involved no fast traveling. You should look it up to get some idea of what to expect.

I never fast traveled in Red Dead Redemption. I hate fast traveling in all games but I thought Red Dead Redemption was one of the greatest games ever just to stroll through the world as if I was in no hurry.

Don't sleep. That way you get (most) of the bonuses that come from leveling up your skills but the monsters stay derpy.

Eh, I'd go crazy hiking all the way around the map in Oblivion.

No fast travel worked great in Morrowind since you could pay to be moved between cities with teleportation between mages guilds, boats and giant bug rides. You could also complete a quest that let you teleport between a number or temples places in a circle around the world map, so you could teleport fairly close to wherever you needed to go.

Friend plays Oblivion and NV/FO3 this way. No fast travelling at all. It's going to take you forever to do stuff :D

Every time you go between cities take the straightest path first time, then deviate from it more each time you make the journey. You'll cover almost the whole map without re-trekking the same terrain too often, and by the time you have to the wild monsters will have changed. Keeps it fresh.

Try doing lots of alchemy - you'll find loads of ingredients and the billion feather potions you make might come in handy because you won't want to haul your loot back to the nearest city every half-hour.

I've done this in Fallout New Vegas and those two things (swap alchemy for survival skill) really helped.

I fast traveled through all of my first two playthroughs mainly because I didn't really know any better and just wanted to beat the game, only doing the side quests I managed to happen upon but by the next few times, I didn't fast travel and that's my preferred way of playing now.
It's much better to see everything and explore every bit of what you can. At least, to me anyway. I found it to be rewarding and it helps too to not look up where things are for a bit unless you absolutely have to.
Adds a bit of immersion by basically wandering around for a bit when suddenly.... you enter an odd Elven ruin.
What could this be? There's a strange NPC here asking for souls.
What does she mean? There's a dead body in the corner. She has powerful armour... then you decide to kill her and take all her stuff. And then, you have the best equipment at the start of the game. ^_^
Or was that just me? >_<

Start the quest where you escort the king's heir, but never take him to where you're supposed to. You'll have an unkillable ally for the rest of the game.
