I am having a ridiculous issue.

After buying the greatest hits Edition of Oblivion; which no one should EVER do for it is the original bug filled build; I found that it kept crashing in the same spot.

Alright I though no matter how awful this game is for a wide variety of reasons I want to play it. Not wanting to play WOW atm I wanted to do the whole build your own character thing.
Anyhow it contniues to crash the moment you interact with the same area of the map which coincidently is the area that houses the first main quest objective.

Is this just a problem that occurs because I haven't scoured my system of every last possible trace of the original Oblivion infestation on every profile on my machine? Or is it just that the PS3 version is so leppered that I should give up and cleanse the disc with fire?

I don't know for sure, but I'd lean towards to ps3 port being a mighty leper. With AIDS.

Seriously, I don't mean to fuel the console flames wars (but every tool who misreads this will most likely respon with OMFG xbox and PC are shit!1) but the playstation architecture is very, very different to that of a PC (as the xbox is essentially a windows based OS). This makes it very difficult to make multiplatform games work well, and that often games that are released on multiple platforms will be inferior on the ps3 when compared the the Xbox/PC. Oblivion is a hugely complex game so I would be inclined to say that the devs have missed some of the unavoidable bugs that would spring up from time to time.

Is it crashing when you try to fast travel, or when you try to walk there?

I know the engine does have a bug that can sometimes cause it to consistantly crash when it tries to autosave (or any other type of saving) inside a cell that has been altered by a plugin (though I've never seen it pop up in Oblivion).

Actually it crashes during both forms of travel. The Northwest corner of the map is just a no go by any means of travel at this time.

Well this is the first cross platform title I have had trouble with personally. (Having rented all of last years dual system titles for both at the same time so I could decide which system I wanted to keep, a competition that teh PS3 soundly and thoroughly won.)

But this isn't about console wars.

here is an interesting little upsdate.
My roomate deleted the System Utility File the game creates and the auto crash spot moved.
Deleted it again and it moved again.

So it looks like I have some form of delopitated answer.
Can anyone explain to a techno-iditio why that occurs please?

Never had that problem it's probably the disc or your playstation.
Then again I bought the Game of the Year Edition.... *shrugs*

Just look at The Orange Box.
yea, unfortunatly i am finding that out firsthand.

OP, IF you bought it used, maybe a thorough cleaning is in order.
If bought new, then I would have to agree that the port of the game may be the issue.

I have the GOTY edition, and I only have a few bugs occur (occasional frame-rate dip, NPCs spawning in the floor.) Typical Bethesda work.

Sad, given that the PS3 port was a year after the original launch. Probably the joys of Sony intentionally making it harder to develop on the console.

the game of the year edition has one HUGE flaw that ruind my game. once you turn into a vampire, you cant change back. if you do the quest to get the antidote, she wont accept the bloodgrass, even if you have it. it sucks. you have to be extremely careful when fighting vampires. i had to start over with an argonian because argonians cant become vampires unless they you ask that dude in the dark brotherhood to infect you.

That and it is Bethesda's first PS3 game and as I recall and their second one, Fallout 3, didn't turn out great either (on the PS3).

Obviously, you have no idea what a good game is if you are calling oblivion awful... Why play it if you think that it is awful? Why not just give up after it stopped working.

now that I got that out of the way... that part of your post just bugged the hell out of me.

I personally never had a problem with the game myself, odds are your PS3 is messed up or something is wrong with the disk.
I have played it on xbox, and pc and didn't have a single problem.
Of course it could also be because of some cross transfer bugs, I think this is bethesda's first crossover title. And the ps3 is very different than the other two platforms it runs on.

Never had that happen before... You could have tried getting rid of the patches on your console and then turn in the quest... I know in one of the expansions you can just bath in some bath thing to get rid of vampirism...

I could have sworn I had an argonian vampire at some point... without going through the dark brotherhood... Seeing as how vampirism is a disease and argonians only have like a 75% resistence to diseases. So as long as you have no bonuses to disease resist you can become a vampire as an argonian it will just take alot longer to contract the disease.

That sucks, sounds like your disc to be honest. I have 5 accounts on my PS3 from Oblivion, all over 200 hours of gameplay in them, and the worst problems I've suffered have been the occaisonal freeze or black screen between loading building and outside. So yeah, get a new disc, the PS3 version and having old Oblivion data is fine, all my old Oblivion data was in my PS3 when I bought the Game of the Year edition.

GotY does suffer an issue with the Vampire Cure quest on the PS3, I should mention before I get yelled at.

I have never had a problem with game of the year or the original and I have 100% both mainlands. (as far as I am aware)
