After working on Tanthalos's problem, I have discovered that some of the PS3's versions of oblivion has some corrupted data for different parts of the game. It doesn't seem that the same disc has the same problem in the same place, but instead, on his 2 discs, his greatest hits edition had corrupted a part somewhere in the vicinity of Chuhul (the town with the monastery for your main story line quest) and would not allow you to travel anywhere outside of the towns on the western part of the world.
His Game of the Year edition, though, had corrupted data in the goblin area of the starting run through the game, so whenever you went through the door, it stopped.
The way the PS3 works, is that as you play through, it saves data from the disc to the hard drive, so as you play, the size of the saved game file in the utility gets bigger. But at each loading part for those areas, the PS3 would attempt to copy those files, and being unable to read them properly, fail and say the saved game data was corrupted.
The way I was able to get it to work was i played the Greatest hits edition til I was in the sewers just after the king dies, save, change discs, and continue. I then went through a quick replay of the entire beggining, without deleting the game utility data, and it worked prefectly. Atleast it did even when i quick traveled
To summerize:
Bethusda needs to get a better CD burner!
