well I have just bought Oblivion for Steam after hearing so much good things about the mods etc, and i did a heavy mod install session

I had Oblivion for the 360 back in 2006 and played i think around 60 hours of it, i never completed the main quest, and i completed the dark brotherhood and the arena along with various other quests

now im looking for some character ideas

should i be a warrior with heavy armour and use axes, or a stealthy ninja-type character

i have the following mods installed (just so you can look at what character is best suited for the mods) :

- Deadly Reflex 6.0

- Tamriel Travellers

- Portable Campsite

- Anvil Bay Expansion

- Natural Environments

- Kvatch Rebuilt

- Thieves Arsenal

So leave me a character idea in the following form

Name: (optional)

Race:

Type: (warrior, stealth, Mage etc)

Armour specialty: light or heavy

Weapon Specialty: Axes, Swords, Magic

and anything else you can think of

Im gunna go watch TV for an hour and come back to read all your ideas

Thank you in advance fellow Escapists :D

I would recommend just playing the game through with all the character types. You're really missing out if you don't experience all the guilds the game has to offer.

From my experiences with oblivion, I would also recommend installing an overhaul mod like oscruo's oblivion overhaul, it's not an easy thing to do but the game is just so much better with it installed.

i can't run oblivion on my PC so i know nothing of mods. but some good character builds I used were:
(before i start, GREAT way to get appropriate names for characters: http://www.silgrad.com/oblivion/rangen/)

Name: (Name Generator Above)

Race: Khajiit

Type: Stealth

Armour specialty: Light

Weapon Specialty: Bows and Shortswords

Reasons: Khajiit are naturally the best thieves and most agile. I generally go with the Thief Sign and Assassin Class. Though if you want to max out your character (something I've never put the math or effort really into) the bonuses to your main talents will actually hurt that possibility. As this sneaky cat, you'll have an advantage in the thieves guild and dark brotherhood. The dark brotherhood will hook you up with some of the best light armor for this build, and will get even better when you rank up and get the second iteration of this armor.

Seconded, especially the part about Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO). It makes the game feel fresh again.

I myself have just started an Oblivion playthrough, and this is the character build I have chosen:

Name: I usually just use my own name, or "The Jackal" because that name is far too good to be restricted to just Far Cry 2.

Race: Dark Elf - For a well rounded character, with the Destruction capabilities and fire resistance for the Oblivion. Also good bonuses with Swords and Bows.

Type: Warrior/Mage

Armour: Light Armour - Less protection, but looks nicer later in the game in my opinion, and you can run faster/carry more stuff.

Weapons: Swords as my main method of combat. Destruction magic and Conjuration magic for support, and a bit of extra help in a pinch. Marksmanship with Bows which I mostly use for sneak attacks, or if I want to RP as a hunter or whatever throughout the game. I also just like using bows to take down enemies.

Birthsign: The Lady - +10 Willpower & Endurance for my Destruction and Restoration magic, and for extra health for my character.

Custom Class: Speciality doesn't really matter, whichever you think you will use the most. I went for Willpower and Endurance with this class. My skills are: Blade, Block, Destruction, Restoration, Marksman, Conjuration, Light Armour. - These are just the major skills I will use for my character. Blade/Block for main combat, with my Conjuration/Destruction for a little bit of support against multiple enemies. Restoration for after battles, when I can heal myself easier. Marksman for fun, because I like to use bows sometimes, and Light Armour instead of Heavy Armour, because of the reasons I mentioned above.

Okay so whilst writing this post and playing, my Xbox 360 disc went unreadable multiple times, so now I will have to switch to my PS3 version of the game, without all the DLC, and restart all over again. But anyway I hope my post gave you some insight to deciding what type of character to play as. :D

I would remove Deadly Reflex, it just doesn't work in my opinion...
Mods like OOO, MMM and the FCOM collection work so much better under the original (if altered) combat system.

Also, if you don't have FCOM running, USE IT.

Try running a pure mage. It's tough at the start but once you get enough magicka to fuel your spells and some nice custom made spells to go with it you'll feel like a god.

Race - Breton
Sign - Atronach
Armour specialty - N/A
Skills - Alchemy, Alteration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism, Restoration and for the last anything works, usually I pick Conjuration to give some meat between me and the baddies. But you can pick an armour skill if you must.

If you've never done stealth, would recommend it. It's one of the few things Oblivion does better than Morrowind or Fallout 3/NV.
