Funny, the only experiences I've had with GS employees is basically...

I have this same problem EVERYTIME I go in. Its with a different employee each time too.

Whenever I buy and xbox game (No genre specificity) I get the PS3 guy who wants to rub it in my face about why PS3 is SOOOOOOOO much better.

Whenever I buy and "E" rated game I get the "Hardcore" gamer girl who thinks that if you don't play exclusively "M" than you're not a hardcore gamer.

And whenever I buy a shooter that isn't CoD I get the Frat boy that plays nothing else and he complains about why my game sucks and why CoD is better.

Luckily they were all fired and now there's an attractive girl (doubt she's a gamer by the few times i've talked to her) and a chill guy who gives me sound advice.

I am 100% with the OP on this. Seriously, he's 16, not 5, I think he can handle Halo, for fuck's sake. Also what the employee said about Pokemon is 100% assholery, and I really hope you're friend responded the way he thinks he did.

At which point this same employee said "Really, you're buying pokemon?!"
I've gotten to the point where I try to goad this kind of reaction from them. It's gotten funny to me. I've walked in and purchased Yu-Gi-Oh games with a perfectly straight face. I enjoy seeing what kind of reactions I get. :D

I assume you are being the devil's advocate. He is 16. Have you ever played Halo? Honestly any mature 14 year old could play Halo without any shocking results.

If the parent is buying the game (a individual who is an adult and the child's guardian) should immediately allow the parent to purchase the game. He has no legal obligation to inform and pester the parent on a decision they have already made.

But that being said if a parent is trying to buy a 12 year old GTA then any caring employee should inform the parent...these scenarios are really situational.
While that's true, it isn't the child(or teen) in question that would come back screaming at the GameStop employee if he had failed to warn them about the purchase, and they were actually offended or against the content in said game.

He covered his ass while doing the parent a favor. If it takes him being slightly annoying to get parents to pay attention to what their kids are playing, so be it. As long as we don't have another parent screaming that GameStop sold their child a murder/rapist trainer, we're all happy.
Game Stop employees have no legal obligation to explain the reasoning behind ratings, only to enforce them when underage children try to buy M rated games.

Good parents take the responsibility to research the games their children want and not expect to have their information handed to them.

Oddly, though my experience likely hinges on the unusual atmosphere of the closest one I frequent, is the opposite of most of the asshole-clerk horror stories on here.

My local franchise outlet is staffed entirely by smart, friendly young ladies who know their shit and obviously love games. Genuinely female gamers who like talking about games of every genre (including shooters), but don't try and turn it into a competition, yet work at the dreaded retailer foretold in woeful forum posts. Must be some kinda slip space rupture into bizzaro world.

Anyways, it's rad.

The employee has no right say anything about what the parent decides is appropriate for their kids.
Sorry but I don't think this is true at all. Perhaps you meant to say he is not obligate or he doesn't have the responsibility to inform the parents in which case I apologize for misinterpreting but how you say it makes it sound like he is doing something wrong. He has every right to offer more information on a product being purchased from the store in which he is currently working. As the OP said once she had heard the information and maintained her decision he let them purchase the game. There's really nothing wrong with that.

THANK YOU! I just don't get why people put apostrophes anywhere like that.

OT: I never actually encountered someone like that, but then again I bought Pokémon on Amazon to avoid being looked at funny.

Never came across obnoxious Gamestop employees.

Then again, I'm a pretty laid back guy who isn't particularly sensitive to this kind of stuff.

its the guys job to sell it to her and shut up
I disagree with that bit. Its the guy's job to make sure the parent knows what is in the game that they are buying for their child.
No it isn't. Its the parents job to know what they are buying for their kids.
That would be nice and all, if the industry weren't currently under attack.

There are plenty of "sell it and shut up" employees who aren't helping the issue. Considering the current state of affairs (the Supreme f'ing Court has decided to hear arguments as to whether games are a special type of media that can be regulated like a controlled substance), I applaud anyone who makes sure he's at least attempted to ensure a parent knows what they're buying for their child.

I don't have any problem with someone preventing a 15 year-old from getting access to BlOps. If a total stranger could talk his mom out of buying it, the kid probably deceived her to get her in the store in the first place.

By the way, take the OP's story with a grain of salt. If he's actually angry enough about someone stating what's in the game and what a typical XBL interaction in Halo is like to post online, he's probably embellishing a bit.

That part of the story was to let you know he was serious about people playing the games that are for their age group. And then the kicker was when he made fun of my friend for buying pokemon. Although had people interpreted that way this thread would have died a long time ago.

Opinionated game store employee, eh? Can't say I've had the 'pleasure'. All the employees I ever meet are "Can I help you?", "No problem, sir.", "Have a nice day.". 'Course, it helps that I'm 29, but I could easily go into any store, buy the most violent game there, and hand it off to anyone else without so much as a raised eyebrow. Other places have people there who are just bad for business.

This is why I order all of my games online, I go to my local game stop once a year for a renewal on the card and that's about all the social interaction I want from them. Also your only 16 op one more year and legally you can buy them carded or not. I like the fact your friend trolled the game stop employee as well.

This.

I find it hard to sympathize; the man is doing his job properly and covering not only his source of income, but also the reputation of his company and responsible gamers on the whole. With all the bad press and scapegoating that 'Gaming' has received lately in the form of 'junk' journalism from shock jocks: I think you don't have much of a platform to stand on.

You may be a mature person, however, having maturity does not give you a self-entitled right to complain when another person is doing their job in an ethical and lawful manner.

You sounds like they would be the only people who are assholes to their customers. I beg to differ... There are assholes evenly on all corners of service industry.

And OMG! A gamestop employee who cares to inform to customer what the product contains! God forbid this heresy, a customer service employee who cares!!! Burn him!!! I bet he also looks like a witch! Burn him for that also! Then drown hes ashes and boil the water!

Why do we get reports of assholes in Gamestop but we don't get reports of them in other services like Mcdonald's - those people don't give a fuck about your food!

i would say the employee is covering his and the shops arse incase some idiot comes back and says this m15 plus game is too violent for my 12 year old son. your an evil corporation.

the employee should only warn the customer once, not talk them out of buying it. they are there to sell products.

but thinking just cause you heaps mature and stuff for your age doesnt mean you should be able to buy m18 stuff. you cant buy porn just cause you act mature.

I've never had that happen. And I've made a few...unique purchases (Record of Agarest War "Naughty" edition and Hyperdimension Neptunia come to mind). That would get annoying.

I've had 2 Gamestop's I've gone to one in a mall and one at the North end of the city. The guys working at the mall one were all nerds 25+, but fun to talk to and didn't give me no crap. This was when I was in high school, and theres another highs school right next to mine and about 2 blocks to the mall, so tons of teens in and out of this place in a day I'm amazed these guys don't hate everyone.

The other one there was this nice short chick working there, she was knowledgeable with games and fun to talk to aswell. We need more women liking games so idiot 14 year olds can't say women don't play video games. Not to say we don't have any but until they shut up, I mean.
I hate those kids.

As for your gamestop..... next time your in there and he starts preaching the "good word" to your parent, tell him or plan ahead to have your parent cut him off and hurry the hell up.

I agree that, that particular clerk is an asshole and suggest you begin shopping at one of the other three gamestops within a five mile radius of your home...Or try learning his work schedule and avoiding going to gamestop at those times.

I ask for ID regardless of age, glance at the year of birth and say 'fine' before either ringing up the item or telling the kid to go away.

Though being 16, I feel that maturity isn't defined by age.
The fact that your first choice is to complain about it and become the center of attention show your immaturity. You still got your terrible game so stop complaining and go play it.

So the gamestop employee was being a little pushy about selling an M rated game. As a former employee I can attest to how annoying it is to go through the speech about how it's an M rated game only for the parent to buy it, then try to return it later pissed off about the content. Then get upset about how they can't return a new game that they opened.
