WAHAHAHAHAHA YOU WILL SUFFER
Reminds me of the Cracked article

http://www.cracked.com/article_19768_6-terrifying-childrens-cartoons-from-around-world_p2.html

Although I don't think as the author assumed that it was ever meant for children. Not really sure what is obscure or not nowdays.

I can assume you've seen/heard of Grave of the Fireflies, Akira and Miazaki films as they are in no way obscure, but other than that everything seems "obscure" at least to a western audience.

I'm just going to leave this (as far as I can tell) comprehensive list from wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animated_feature_films

The only two that comes to mind that you may not have seen is Paprika (one of my favorites) and to a lesser extent The Girl who Leapt through Time

We are, it seems, talking animated of all varieties, not just anime, so I'd suggest Waltz With Bashir.

I suggest the French animated film The Illusionist. Great, powerful film. Also, pretty funny. Almost no dialogue.

Does The Adventures of Tom Thumb count? It's stop motion and the protagonist is made of clay.

Although this isn't obscure to most Regular Show fans, 2 in the am pm is pretty darn funny and available on youtube.

I just thought of something...would any of Myazaki's films be considered "obscure?"
I don't think ever in Japan, and not since Spirited Away in the United States.

Since I'm an anime buff, my knowledge is more limited to that area. I recommend every film by Makoto Shinkai. He's been called the new Miyazaki but his movies are rarely released overseas, and when they do they're very limited DVD releases. Though if you're an anime you're more likely to have heard of him or at least be familiar with his work.

If you want to get even more obscure though I personally love watching animated shorts. This one in particular is a favorite of mine:

There's also Ani*Kuri15. It's composed of 15 one minute long shorts done by 15 different directors. Also, to the people who keep picking fights with people who hate on anime because they think all anime look the same, stop recommending Akira and Cowboy Bebop (seriously, getting old), just show them Ani*Kuri15.

Well, it depends on the level of obscurity you're looking for.

I'd say Masaaki Yuasa's works are rather obscure, especially because of the very unique art styles and structure of his works, like Mind Game, Kemonozume, Kaiba, Cat Soup, etc.

I don't really watch Western animations but I could offer a few old Soviet cartoons which could possibly appear somewhat strange to someone who has never seen them before.

Felidae comes to mind.

Oh man, I've been having nightmares for ages after seeing this film as a kid.

I was blown away by Voices of a Distant Star ...not only by the power of its creative vision and emotional impact.. but that something that looked so professional and polished was done entirely by ONE man on his home computer.

plus I got a real kick out of him subverting the 'teen girls piloting mechs' trope to tell a simple tale of solitude, isolation and longing.

Honestly Dumbo got a bit weird, this is when he gets drunk (it is a kid's film).

Slightly off topic but Disney does have some hidden messages.

Fantastic planet is an interesting film. And if you dont mind live action thats been animated over I would highly recommend Waking Life & A scanner darkly.

But I would say the most obscure & interesting iv seen so far is the adventures of Dr Morello.

I'd like to dump additional recommendations on Secret of Kells and Cats Don't Dance.

Not sure how obscure Cats Don't Dance is (since I watched it ALL THE TIME as a kid), but I only watched Secret of Kells very recently, and only because I was bored and on Netflix. I was surprised how much I liked it.

And if the earlier video wasn't clear enough, Cats Don't Dance has absolutely fantastic animation. It just... pops.

On that note The Triplets of Belleville. Just as good. It's story is a lot like 101 Dalmations.

Re: Suspension - personal request (probably, though the suspending mod usually indicates that...). Para's done that a bit in recent weeks/months (comes on for a couple days, then requests a suspension for a while... I think...).

OT: Only one comes to mind, the only problem being that it's in Mandarin and I don't know of any releases in English. It's based on one of the famous Chinese myths and is similar to Journey to the West in feel, but isn't that one.

So far in my life there have been TWO animated movies that I remember seeing in my childhood but haven't seen again in upwards of 10 years. I'm not if these are really 'obscure' but I haven't seen them in any video store in DVD form, not even in the bargain bins...

They are:
The Halloween Tree (Saw it at least twice but never again. Thought it was good)

and Carrotblanca, one of the very first Cartoon Network original shorts, starring the Looney Toons. Only saw that one once. And, to my knowledge, they have never shown it since.

Does anybody know what happened to these? I remember liking them, but that may be the nostalgia goggles talking.

Well, I recommend Persepolis, it's french, but there's subtitles. I'm the only one I know who's actually seen it so I guess it's kind of obscure.
