Thanks so much for linking to this. I'd known there was a film adaptation but I'd never gotten around to hunting it out, so it's great to have finally seen it. It's very well done, though the book is a lot deeper.

The Princess and the Cobbler: The tragic maligned animated masterpiece that holds the Guiness record for the longest production time for a motion picture of all time. I include here the Princess cut, which is better than the Thief version, but another recobbled one is out there somewhere which is more definitive.
Reading about it's history, particulary in relating to Aladdin, is just about heartbreaking.

But, to cheer you up- I present- THE SOVIET RUSSIAN WINNIE THE POOH! (no really, it is)

...who is way more badass than the western version, I might add!

Oh man, I've been having nightmares for ages after seeing this film as a kid.
My pleasure. ;]

I've found something more. Not much, but still.

Waltz with Bashir
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Renaissance (personally didn't like this one very much, but it's worth mentioning)
The Last Unicorn

I'll post anymore if I can remember.

More recent, but possibly overlooked include: Batman: Under the Red Hood, and Justice League: Doom.

Also whilst not actually a film, but the Shakespeare Animated Tales series [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakespeare:_The_Animated_Tales] is wonderful.

The Flight of Dragons.

The only reason I know this movie exists is because our classed watched almost all of it in elementary school. I'm 21 now, and I still remember this movie, even though we didn't finish it! My entire life, this movie has lingered at the back of my mind, for no other reason than having never seen the end to the movie.

All I know for sure about it is that it has James Earl Jones voicing the main bad guy.
That film scared me at some points when I was younger. I should rewatch it.

Seriously, no mention of Secret of Nihm? It's an extremely underrated film; I think Nostalgia Critic mentioned it in one of his videos.

Also, this could be perfect for the "Scary thread".

Watched the first half of that movie in Senior English class. We were reading the actual graphic novel.

Ima throw more recommendations behind Secret of Kells, Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir.

For my suggestion I'd say check out Waking Life. Crazy animation with a heap of different styles. Also some interesting philosophical discussion mixed in. Was done via a form of tracing live action, similar to Waltz with Bashir, so you could argue that its technically not animation haha.

Could also check out a Scanner Darkly, I've never watched it, but similar style.
Have you seen Titan AE or Heavy Metal? Theyre kinda cool, but if your into obscure animation they've probably been checked off. Or the Sinbad one Dreamworks animation did.
Finally Renaissance. Its a 3D animated movie, but has a black and white animation style like some comics. Was made in 2006.

Hoodwinked - The story of Red Riding Hood as a who-done-it. One of my personal childhood favorites.

Not too obscure, but still enough to warrant a recommendation.

Also, a singing goat. Yeah, singing goat.

Time to flex the ol' "Animation Nerd" muscles.

Let's see, you said you already watched the Bakshi stuff...so I'm assuming you already saw Wizards. If not, see that you do.

My Neighbor Totoro: Specifically the Fox Family Features translation from before Disney had the distro rights. Coming from a guy who prefers to watch any foreign animation with subtitles, the fact that I like this one as much as I do says worlds for the voice acting.

The Point: It's a bit preachy and more than a little bit hippy dippy but what do you expect it came out in 1971 and was narrated by Ringo Starr.

Shinbone Alley: An Animated version of a musical adaptation of a book from the 1920's called Archy and Mehitabel.(I have something of a soft spot for this one.)

The Phantom Tollbooth: I'm cheating a bit here because it starts and ends in a live action sequence. But the middle 70 minutes is pure Chuck Jones animated wonder.

Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure: This movie is actually kind of an unfocused disaster...but it's still a lot of fun to watch and the animation is really quite wonderful.
