I try to stick to current gen games that you can still buy new.

Xotic (console/steam)- A unique FPS which isnt so much about fragging enemies, instead it has shmup / 80s style highscore, where it's all about the working out the best chains, combos and multipylers to get the top score on the leaderboards

Outland - Unique platformer with Ikaruga shmup styled polarity switching.

Sin & Punishment 2 (wii) Rail Shooter hybrid with lightgun / shmup gameplay thrown in.

Wartech: Senko no Ronde (360, DC, Arcade) A hybrid of Street Fighter and shmup

Might&Magic Clash of Heroes. (just about every current gen system) hybrid of puzzler, chess and JRPG

Legend of Fae is somewhat similar in that its a JRPG / Puzzle hybrid but in a totally different way

Dustforce (PC) precision platformer similar to super meatboy

Gungirl 2 (PC freeware) 2D run and gun with zombies and great weapons, metriodvania elements

Guardian Heroes XBLA, a beat em up with branching stages and story, gameplay is unique due to it using lanes rather than full 360 deg movement, allows the use of more fighter style combos

Fortune Summoners: anyone who loves the original NES castlevanias will find themselves at home, good ai, cutesy graphics, party based.

To The Moon. It's a brilliant story/game that looks like old S-NES RPGs. It's one of the most touching, funny and engaging experiences I've played in a long time.
For what system?

The most obscure game I can think of is also the rarest game I have ever come across.
Rule Of Rose.
Everyone who ever thought Silent Hill 2 was the best horror game should try this game.

3D dot game Heroes... One of the most obscure games I ever played. Just because it doesn't have realistic graphics doesn't mean is bad, is a great enjoyable game.

Mount & Blade (which is very annoying to say out loud). It's got some rough spots, but it works mechanically and is the only game I know of where you are able to personally fight alongside an army, not just point and click to tell them where to go from high in the sky. I have yet to make major conquests in that game, but that's because, realistically, raising an army capable of conquering nations takes a LONG time, especially with complications like moral, money, food, and wandering Lords saying, "My you have quite an army. And you raided one of my caravans for supplies. Me and these other Lords I'm marching with are going to kill at least fifty of your men now."

Still, it is fun and challenges your ability to plan and think in the long run.

You know I've heard people complain that To the Moon isn't really a game. Those people are soulless idiots.
Yes or maybe I was doing something wrong, because I had more fun and was more engaged playing To The Moon than many AAA games.

Everyone should play this game. And it's definitely a game, even if the interactions are not so much, it has enough of it. It's really an experience. Anyone that still hasn't played it, play it now! It'll make you think about what games can really achieve which no other media can.

It's my pet game, so I'll go ahead and say it here: Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga. Fantastic RPG, does so many things right (the combat was a bit bland, but oh well) and yet didn't get much press or much of a fan following though it's very, very slowly gotten a bit more popular thanks to Steam sales and whatnot.

I'm surprised that a game like, say, Aquaria doesn't have a bigger fanbase compared to something like Cave Story. I think Aquaria was a much better game (though that's just me), and for people who like beautiful games, wonderful music, and so on, it really is great. Maybe it's the fact that it seems like magical mermaid princess stuff until about three minutes in but most people leave two minutes in.

Check out The Last Express. Excellent historical fiction adventure game from, I think, 1997. Had no marketing, but was made by Jordan Mechner, who also made the original Prince of Persia. It's available for $10 on DotEmu, and I think GoG.

Also would add 'Vagrant Story'. A great PS1 game back when Square Enix made good games.
My PSX #1 game. Great atmosphere, engaging story and interesting characters. Truly one of the last great performances by Square(soft) before it merged with Enix in 2003 and initiated the decline with FF X-2. What a shame.

Well there goes my post.... Another great PS2 RPG would be Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.(2004)

Like a mix of Final Fantasy 7(especially the setting) and Pokemon. Freakin tough at times,

lotsa interesting demons (fiends) to create and a unique world had me playing for many hours

just reaching one of the endings. I wanna say more but i'll spoil the plot knowing me. PLAY IT

What this man said. Rule of Rose is a great and twisted game, though unfortunately I never managed to beat, I still had a lot of fun playing it.

The Disciples series is great fun. It's a challenging dark fantasy turn based strategy game that kind of flew under the radar. Most people prefer HOMM but I always come back to Disciples (especially Disciples 2).

Any of the amazing 'Spiderweb Software' games.

Best isometric RPG games ever made, and I never seen a thread about them here.

Shame on you Escapists.

For shame.

lol, super creepy voiced guy ftw

Also, you have to view this in HD full screen, it's a text heavy series.

Get a demo ASAP of any of these games. Do yourself that favor.
They were awesome games. I still remember mail ordering the orginal 'Exile' series back in the day. Strangly i always prefered the Exile series to the Avernum remakes and now the new remake on steam. Always thought it had more colour and detail in the 2D graphics compared to the 3D ones but i think thats just me and nostalgia.
