Cidade De Deus - City of God (Not religious, it's about crime life in Rio de Janeiro) Amazing movie.

Yojimbo - Directed by quite possibly the greatest director of all time Akira Kurosawa. Older movie, but really good. Classic story, and the movie Last Man Standing with Bruce Willis is a remake of it.

Amelie (or Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) is a French film that really isn't that obscure at all, but if you don't tend to watch foreign films you might have missed it, which is an absolute tragedy. It is one of my favorite films of all time. No matter how your day has been, you will be much happier after watching the movie than you were when it started.

Also consider M, a 1931 German thriller starring Peter Lorre. It's about a town in which there is a child killer kidnapping and murdering little girls, and the police can't find him; as a result, the criminals of the city take the investigation into their own hands. According to my film textbook, it is one of the six first sound films ever made that didn't suck ass.

Serenity, of course, and Baz Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet (i.e. the modern adaptation). I appreciate that these aren't too obscure, but they still aren't exactly mainstream. With the possible exception of Serenity.

I feel like I should take the opportunity to shamelessly plug the upcoming ten-minute short film that I'm involved in at my university, it hasn't been named yet but when it's filmed and we put it on the internet or whatever we do, then I'll make sure to post it here for the Escapist to enjoy. I won't tell you the details because of spoilers, and the script isn't finalised yet, but suffice to say it's set on a beach and has incest and voodoo. Should be fun! :D

Oh, and The Blair Witch Project, and The Butterfly Effect. Again, not exactly obscure, but these aren't mainstream either, and are definitely worth a look. Especially if you like creepiness, and in the case of the latter, psychological twists...

Pi - Odd film about a troubled mathematical genius trying to unlock a mathematical code for the stock market - but who discovers something more important.
Good choice. Any Aronofsky film, really.

Audition. Get ready to be disturbed. That's all I'm going to say.

I love "King of Kong". It's pretty obsure, but awesome. Although I am willing to bet most people on this forum know what it is :)

Also "Michael Moore Hates America."

The Eye. The original cantonese version not the crappy american remake.

There is a short and distiguished list of movies that scared the crap out of me.

This is at the top of them.

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky.

An exquisitely campy and violent Japanese film with an sizable cult following.

The best part: it's available for free on google films.

Rock and Rule - a happy little animated ditty out of Canada...drugs, rock and roll, and the silliest slaying of a demon ever.
