Obsidian Entertainment has a history of developing games based on previously established worlds. The studio has delivered sequels to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, and Fallout, and a recently discovered document reveals that the company may be handling a new non-game-related property.

Following the finale of Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian is looking to bring the hammer down on a new licensed project.

A corporate profile of game-centric talent agency Digital Development Management reveals that Obsidian is developing a game based on a "leading animation franchise." As spotted by Joystiq, the document in question doesn't provide any further details regarding the in-development title.

This is the first reveal that Obsidian is working on an animated property, but it's not the first time work on a big franchise has been mentioned. In an interview earlier this year, studio cofounder Feargus Urquhart referenced a mysterious licensed project, saying, "There actually is another game that I can't talk about at all. It's a licensed product that when people hear about it, they're going to be 'well you had to do that. There's no option, if I was a developer and I was offered that, I would just do it.'"

Regarding Obsidian's stance on working with established properties, Urquhart recently said, "I really like making licensed products. I really enjoy playing in other people's worlds." The studio released Dungeon Siege III earlier this year and is currently working on a Wheel of Time adaptation in collaboration with Red Eagle Games.
It doesn't give any hints about just which animated series or franchise is being adapted, but I think its a good guess that it is a Western show. So what do you think it could be? Avatar TLA? A DC Animated Universe game? What sort of animated Franchise best fits the Obsidian mindset?

It'll be a gritty, well-written Simpsons RPG that deals with the moral grey areas and existential quandaries of married life. Oh, and it'll be broken.

Hmm... This might turn out to be interesting, but I'm not holding my breath. And action RPG set in the world of Avatar could be totally amazing though. Just make sure it doesn't follow the storyline of the show. Make a totally new Avatar the protagonist.

Obviously MLP. Obviously. Gritty, dark, moral choice driven RPG. It can't be anything but.

Well, I liked Neverwinter Nights 2 and New Vegas, so I have high hopes for this, whatever it is.

I'll be watching to see how it pans out.

pinky and the brain, or a dark gritty reboot of Johnny Bravo!

And it'll be buggy and need four patches before it's even released!

I was giggling to myself and thinking 'what if it was boondocks?'

But...

Here might be something to give you some ideas... I don't know though, this is definately out of date now.

Probably Avatar, but I wouldn't be surprised at My Little Pony. Neither of those shows have had a glitchy, lackluster, almost unplayable game made in their likeness in a while.

You laugh, but Bioware (who Obsidian pretty much plays second fiddle to) made an RPG for the DS based on Sonic the Hedgehog, of all properties. If Sonic can be turned into a decent RPG, My Little Pony isn't that far fetched.

OT: I'm guessing that, if it's something that's been mentioned in this thread, it's either The Boondocks, Avatar: The Last Airbender, or Adventure Time. Personally, I would love a dungeon crawler based on Adventure Time. That show feels like what happens when a couple of frat boys drop LSD and then decide to play D&D while trippin' balls; in other words, yes, please make an RPG out of that.

For properties that haven't been mentioned yet: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might work. Granted, that technically started as a comic, but the original comic version is so different from the franchise that it spawned that they may as well be two separate entities.

I would love for this to be Avatar: The Last Airbender. Adventure Time would be really cool, too.

The only other non-anime animated properties that I can think of that would be pretty cool might be ThunderCats, The Venture Bros., and some comic based stuff like the aforementioned DC Universe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...

Hey...I don't think I watch anything animated. At least not anything that wasn't made in the 90's. So I'm clueless. But Obsidian is probably my second favorite developer, so I'm down for whatever.

An Avatar game would be sick, assuming Obsidian put in their trademark RPG elements, stayed away from Aang, and maybe actually listened to their beta testers. Of course, I won't hold my breath on any of the latter.

Well if it is set in the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe that would be awesome.

However it shouldn't be set during the actual shows timeline and should take place at another time.
