So the phonebook just got delivered today and it got me thinking, what other things do you guys think are obsolete but are just hanging around for some reason.

For me the yellow pages just seem so wierd in paper form. i havent used the book in years and i think the last time i used it was when the internet went down and i was looking up my ISP number. the only reason i can think they are still around is that older generations dont know how to look up yellowpages.com.

so how about you. obselete stuff?

My house has hundreds of batteries that were bought for my Gameboy colour but were never used... I think they may have expired.

Home phones maybe. I think everyone is getting to the stage where you just have a cell. If not that, music CDs, yes people still buy them. But who actually uses them? They rip the music then let it sit on a shelf.

I wish I had batteries, because SSBB is a great play-with-friends game (as is MarioKart).

OT: No idea. The appendix maybe?

3 1/2 Disk Drives. Seriously, who uses them anymore?

No, wait, I still play Carmen Sandiego. Best Crime-Solving game ever.

You know you are behind on the times when you use basically everything every one has mentioned so far.

I guess I would say cassettes.

Because they're better. You don't have to hope that the machine spirit is in a good mood and will actually give you the change of gear when you want it; with a manual you make that machine spirit your ***** instead of gritting your teeth and bearing it, waiting for the shift.

Americans, tuh.

That's using them, no? besides, I'd rather have a CD than buy my music digitally praying that whatever nebulous service I gave my money to still exists whenever the time comes to actually reconstruct my library.

I must disagree; manual transmissions are the most fun and most engaging way to drive, if and only if you have the skill to drive them.

Honestly it would solve a lot of problems if there was no automatic transmissions because:

1) the quality of drivers would increase, because ppl would need to actually learn more to drive
2) there would be a lot less accidents cause by doing stuff while driving like using a cell phone or eating cause you'll need two hands to drive
3) and if driven correctly, a manual transmission will cause the car to be more fuel efficient and more oil efficient (thats transmission oil and engine oil)

so to put this into perspective its like saying a desktop computer is obsolete compared to a laptop, everything might be simpler, but a large amount of function is cut, and costs more

unless it's a racecar, and you're racing with it, i don't see the legitimacy of needing that much control. that's the only argument i have against it. if you can prove that having manual control is more useful than automatic control in an everyday situation, then i'll concede.

Also manual transmissions make anyone look badass when they drive them.

1) i'm not even gonna justify that statment with a response. o.o
2) that's just human stupidity at work, nothing to do with the transmission. it might actually just make things more dangerous to have a manual if there's a human behind the wheel who engages in such activities while they're driving... >.>
3) ok, i can actually stand behind this one. it makes sense. so for this reason, manual transmissions may not be completely obsolete.

Driving along at 40, you nip onto a motorway or a rural road with a national speed limit, it's clear and you gun it.

You remain at 45-50 whilst the car decides that it's going to be belligerent and not up your gear ratio for a while because it's still smarting from that pothole fifteen miles back. You're there revving like a twat waiting for the car to catch up.

Manual? Clutch down, stick up, that's the way we like to drive here in civilised not-America.

1) You should because it makes sense. Driving an automatic, you don't have to think beyond Stop and Go.
To be blunt, there's a reason why Manual licences also allow you to drive Automatics, but not the other way around.
2) No. With a manual, said person would have less time to even think about doing stupid shit.

I actually use my CDs as much, if not more, than my MP3 player. I just find it so tranquil to pop a CD into the stereo and listen to it for an hour.

And I'll also disagree with newspapers being obsolete, though I'd prefer a real electronic substitute, what with saving paper and all. Online newspapers don't cut it for me, because it's far harder for me to pay attention to an LED screen, and I don't like having to load between pages. A cross between an Ebook and a newspaper would obsolete newspapers for me.
