Probably one of the greatest speed runs ever in my opinion. Was lucky enough to experience the hype and the feels on twitch when this happened.

Now before the usual haters of these runs appear let me explain a few things that many just skip over. It is very disheartening seeing the years of work these runners put in immediately discarded by many because of the use of glitches.

This is a any% category run. This means that much of the game is skipped using glitches in the game. These glitches are pulled off by Cosmo himself and no tools (TAS) were used.
This run is the culmination of over a decade of work by the Zelda speed running community and Cosmo goes into the history behind a lot of the discoveries.
The post run commentary by Cosmo goes into detail as to how the strategy and glitches work and also the history behind them.
One thing that Cosmo doesn't really mention is the hundreds of hours that he spends just practicing each of these glitches trying to figure out the best way to pull them off.

Personally I love the any% category more than the others because of all of the time and effort that goes into the discovery and practicing of these glitches and strategies and watching this work get pulled off successfully is really something.

Anywho, I just wanted to get this up with further explanation into the speed run category before some half-arsed news article appears try for some click bait which has unfortunately happened a few times on this site (also Kotaku but well, its Kotaku. What can you expect).
I know many of you will still not agree with this category of speed running, and that's of course perfectly fine and I respect all of you for your preferences. I just ask that people can at least recognise the work that is put into these runs and not just discount them straight off.

Also here is a link to the live version of this run - http://www.twitch.tv/cosmowright/c/4703125

hah ohh I remember the last time one of these rolled around...

haters be hatin all over the place.

Still, good job on making it clear what category this is, not like someone can post acting ignorant to the fact it is an any% run

frickin crazy though, can't imagine ever putting this much work into a speed run

I bet I can beat Ocarina of Time quickly too by using the Gameshark.

I get that pulling off the glitches is hard and I think people deserve credit for THAT but not cheating and beating a game quickly by skipping most of it.

Yeah, finding and using the glitches is impressive in a "how did they figure that out" kind of way, but the actual timing yourself after glitching that much of the game just doesn't interest me. I'm not going to disparage it because I've seen people compete over much sillier things, but I really don't find the actual speed run that impressive compared to the glitches and technique involved with obsessing over breaking the game in any way possible.

Ocarina of time is kind of an extreme example, because that one glitch that lets you bypass the entire game except the first dungeon, but these kinds of speed runs in general have always just come off as kind of boring, I've already seen the game exploited to beat it in less than 20 minutes it was interesting to see someone break the game so thoroughly and still beat it, but I really couldn't care less if someone manages to do the same thing a couple seconds faster.

Speed running in general just strikes me as something very boring to watch, maybe the runners are having fun competing to shave such small increments of time off their scores, but it's just not my cup of tea.

Congratulations to this guy anyway I guess, I may not get it, but at least other people seem excited over it.

It's a sporting event - it helps to get inside the head of the speedrunner and see what he's trying to do - if you're experienced at spectating speed runs for a game you'll know when a tricky part is coming up, you'll know if there's a debate in the community for how to handle a particular situation, etc., all of which adds to the drama.

It's like watching basketball - the more you know about both the game of basketball and the individual teams and players the more the experience means to you.

All "races" are about shaving small increments of time off, even (to some extent) long-range races like the Tour de France. Consider how excited the sporting world was when someone first ran the mile in under 4 minutes. Speedrunning game geeks are the modern digital versions of jock geeks.

The only time I got close to speed running stuff was Mario Kart 64, when I was still a wee lad. I would play the timed trials of each stage trying to figure out if there were shortcuts or things I could do to mess up other players. The two best ones I figured out was using Lightning on the Wario Stadium jump closest to the lap line, and the shortcut on Rainbow Road that I got so good at, I was able to make it all three laps in the time trial and get an insanely short time.

I would never be able to do something like this guy, finding all the glitches and use them to run through the game, but if that's what some people like to do, then let them do it. The fact that someone would go through an entire game to just find them is impressive.

Ya gotta love Cosmo. His skills are amazing, and he's so casual about it too.
