Where is this whole revolution in gaming and VR coming from?

I've used one of the dev kits in Mirrors Edge at an expo, and its a great display that is very immersive, so that almost all that you see is the game world, and it makes you really feel those falls, but that's hardly VR. Head turning to turn camera is likewise interesting, but still not VR. It is an interesting and awesome display unit, but that's it. Its not a revolution, its not VR, its not some massive change in the way you play games. Its a big change in how you visualise them, but that's about it in my experience.
