As you might know, Steam is doing an epic sale on the Mass Effect Series - the original is about 5 bucks. Should I go for it? Is the story such that I have to begin with the first one? Because I don't really want to buy two games, but ME2 has gotten reviews in general. Hrmmmm...

You could buy hard copies instead and stop killing gaming through digital distribution.

You need both of them. Playing the second without importing your save from the first is just silly.

Story is central to Mass Effect, so I'd recommend starting at the beginning.

Not to mention the number of things that carry over from 1 to 2.

Yes, because EA's entire week of awesome deals on Steam is obviously an attempt to get everyone to buy hardcopies.

I sort of get your point, but... as long as I'm not pirating (which I never have, not really) I don't see how it hurts anyone.

Edit: EPICLY NINJA'D hahahaha...oh man...

If he buys the hardcopy of Mass Effect 1 he'll have to put up with SecuROM. Which trust me, you do not want to have to deal with SecuROM. Its not fun.

How exactly is Steam killing games? Devs get a cut, and Valve gets a cut. Instead of pirating, an actual, legitimate company gets money, which they can use to support future endeavors. You help gaming when you buy a game legally! But, since you buy it online, you kill the industry. I never understood this argument. Point me to where you can find a new copy of Mass Effect in a disk form
OT: If you're interested, buy it. I haven't played it personally, but seeing as it's only five bucks I might get it too...
Apparently, if you start with the first you can move that shepherd into the second, which, from reviews, seems to be the only way to play. It looked like fun, and if it's that cheap, what do you have to lose? If you never take a chance with gaming you're never going to find those awesome titles that missed your radar. Also, just get one if you're not sure. If you like it, then you can get two at a later date.

Yes, definitely DEFINITELY get them both. That way, you won't have to play catch up when the finale to this decade's greatest trilogy.

Get the first one first: treat yourself to one of the greatest sci-fi epic of our time, and do your part to keep Valve (and Bioware) in the black. Also, get the second one, because it's okay (and because it's extremely important that you understand what's going on).

Yeah, we're murdering gaming with every single distribution deal.

Another point is that game companies make no money from pre-owned games and like you say you can't really get new copies of it... or wouldn't because they may still be something like £20

OT I have both games, finished the first one and enjoyed it... final boss irratated me but done it after a few goes (shouldn't need to be in a spoiler right?) And i'd suggest getting it, also I haven't played the second one that much.. never got round to it.

I would say you must play the first one for story sake, but if you get aggravated by terrible, clunky controls and a disgusting item management system then maybe you should read up on the first one's story and play the second.

The first is the better RPG-FPS. The second is the better FPS-RPG. Don't trust reviews... Reviews are the Devil!

Of course you start at number one, and work you work through to number 2.

Also, you should start Mass Effect at the first game and then move on to the sequel after that.

For $5 it would be criminal for anyone not to own and play the original Mass Effect. Its a great game with an awesome story. Has elevators which come on who doesnt like riding in elevators! Okay last one was a joke but its a great experience and well worth playing before the second one.

Man that game is still worth the 60 i spent on it when it came out so for it too be 5 is just blowing my mind how anyone doesnt own it now.

Get both and play the first one first (duh). If you can't afford the extra $5 to include the first one, you should probably rethink your priorities.
