What? Who cares? Donald Trump is supplying our shipments of crazy for now. Have you seen America? North Korea can't top that shit. And if Trump gets elected then North Korea will have to discover a new niche, because loud ignorant blowhard country that doesn't actually do anything will be taken.
Yup. Donald Trump is the best comparison to the psychopath in North Korea. You know. One insults his rivals on Twitter like a full-time troll from 4Chan, and the other executes them by shooting them out of an anti-aircraft gun. Clearly they are the exact same thing. :/

Sorry, but I don't think there is much of a comparison. Trump may be loud and obnoxious and a bit crazy, but no matter what happens, Congress and the Supreme Court will be there to keep his powers in check. North Korea is starved half to death and brainwashed to think that everything is great, and if there is any dissent they are either executed or sent to hard labor camps. This comment is the exact definition of first world problems.

The DPRK is what you get when no one in power for decades at a time, has even heard of the phrase, "Don't feed the troll."

I mean, we literally fed it.

You guys don't understand. North Korea is an ASIAN country! They have an ancient and exotic culture, and if they have any problems, it's because of American imperialism. You all need to be more sensitive.

They have no concept of foreign affairs outside of "WAR!", "We say we're at war but not really", "currently not at war but really hate you" and "you're so far away from us we don't have any idea who you are".

...great.

So now where gonna have to go in, kick there asses, and have another section of the world we have to prop up for decades right?

*sigh* well at least I look forward to seeing and learning about the culture of north korea honestly over the next couple of years. They're in for some heavy culture shock when they get video games.
Na as someone else posted above, if NK really gets out of hand China will launch a coup and install a new puppet government. The last thing China wants is anymore US personnel within 100 miles of the SE China Sea. The only real question would be whether China does set up a puppet government or just annexes the damn thing as a new province.

Annexing NK would be like shooting yourself in the foot... with a 12 gauge slug.
Unification of Germany was an intense drain and E. Germany was nowhere near as impoverished as the DPRK

A unified Korea would be under a depression so epic it would make 30s Europe look pleasant while annexation would complete knock over the nice little house of cards China's economy currently is on a scale that would make people look back on the good times of late 2008.
Perhaps the Kims are more clever then we thought - Make your country so poor that no one dare liberate it.

Freak'n brilliant.
and then use your unassailable position to... smuggle meth into the country propping you up?

China wants absolutely nothing to do with absorbing almost twenty-five million functionally illiterate, thoroughly indoctrinated North Korean refugees. (How indoctrinated? Because of the famine, the DPRK tells its citizens to supplement their food with sawdust. And they do.) One of the reasons China has been propping up North Korea is to keep that problem contained.

Do they actually have nuclear weapons though? Because if so, this is kinda serious. I am not really up to date on this issue.

Last I heard, they had weapons but the range was pitiful, so it wasn't really too much of a worry for NA, at least.

I just don't want another post WW1 Germany thing happening.

They have primitive fission weapons, and pretty much no reliable delivery system. The unreliable one they have could maybe hit the US.

Realistically though, it's a non-issue. As crazy as we all know the Kim's are, they aren't that crazy. They know that the moment they try anything truly stupid, the best case scenario is the world dog piling them, and the worst case is China turning South Korea into a proper island.

They also know that as long as they make a bunch of noise, we'll provide aid just to get them to shut up.

Well, technically korean war never officially ended.

So how can you declare war when you are already in one? They want to 1v1 US or something?
From what I can tell... yes. Yes they do. Absolutely. Yes, without doubt. Yes absolutely.

Sometimes you got to wonder if the world is a big ol game of Civilization and NK is being played by some persons retard brother who they can't boot because your parents want him included in stuff.
Actually, the AI will behave EXACTLY like North Korea (except that they follow through on the war thing) if you trap them down to one city.

I had a game where Japan and Rome were CONSTANTLY attacking me (Japan tried to sneak attack me in the early game and were always plotting against me). And every times I was pushing one of them back, the other immediately declared war on me and I had to make peace with one of them so I could deal with the other.

Finally, I got fed up, fought a war on two fronts, won, and after several successive wars in which I took one or two cities, I had both Rome and Japan down to just one city left.

And for the rest of the game, they'd sit there, simmering angrily. Then they'd denounce me all the time. Then, as soon as they built up a handful of forces, they went "WE KNOW WE HAVE NO CHANCE BUT WE DECLARE WAR ON YOU!", and sent spearmen up against armed artilley, got their armies wiped out, and then when you take pity on them and make peace, they make OBSCENE demands of you for it.

I eventually just put them out of their misery.

(This is also the same round where russia went form steadfast ally all game long to instant bitter enemy because ONE time I refused to empty my entire treasury to help them in an economic slump. We eventually escalated to nuclear war as a result. No joke)

"The Kims" aren't really in control though, or at least it's not clear how in control. The state is run by the military, a military which constantly tells its people that they are the strongest army in the world (which is not too far off, it is one of the largest) and nothing can defeat them. That is why the constant sabre rattling occurs, because it serves to maintain this illusion of military superiority. The danger is that it's never clear to what extent these people actually believe the rhetoric, and even if they don't it's still possible that they could be caught in their own charade and have no choice but to act. It is a very tense and dangerous situation, and not one which is particularly well suited to bravado.

The reason why the economy is so bad is because the military is allowed to dictate its own budget, and thus monopolizes most of the resources which could be going towards development. This is also why an "invasion" of North Korea would be a spectacularly bad idea. The army is like something out of the cold war and would likely only be capable of a few months of serious resistance, but it is also enormous and would be well suited to asymmetrical warfare against any invading force. Military losses on the attacking side would be far, far higher than I think many people assume.. let alone the civilian casualties on both sides, which would be astronomical even without the potential use of nuclear weapons.

Yeah, wake me when they actually DO something other than fail to launch a missile.

I've heard it said that South Korea alone could handle a conflict with North Korea at this point, simply due to the gap in technology and capability. Considering how malnourished the people are, I really find it hard to believe they could manage a conflict for long. They'd probably end up asking us or South Korea for food to feed their people before it was over.

And this is all assuming China wouldn't get involved. By all accounts China is sick of Best Korea's actions.

Funny enough, this is pretty much exactly how I describe North Korea as a country.

Incidentally, this thread is rapidly turning into proof that North Korea isn't the only country which puts out propaganda.

North Korea is not an oppression-themed amusement park. It's not a fun exotic place where "OMG did you hear what wacky laws they have." It's not there to provide dank memes or top kek. It's not just some fat kid living out a childish fantasy. It's a country with millions of inhabitants. It has forced labour camps. It conducts genocide and purges of its own people, not to mention to semi-deliberate policy of starvation. It has raised several generations of children to believe that informing on their parents (who are then disappeared) is not just acceptable but normal and not worthy of consideration. Where boys are taken away from their families for military training. It's a country where saying or doing the wrong thing will get you removed from existence just like that, and your family will simply denounce you or forget you ever existed.

The state ideology of North Korea is not funny, because to millions of people it is real. The sabre rattling and posturing may be a ruse to extract more aid money or to soothe the genocidal hatred and military-worship which the population has been fed for several generations now. It may simply be a way of carrying on the lie, but to most people in that country the lie is reality. It's not cute or funny or rebellious, it's life and death to those people.

So, North Korea is exempt from comedy and/or get taken the piss out of?

Dont think so. Yes, the people are treated like shit and are brainwashed, but it doesnt stop us making fun out of their egotistical narcissistic leader and his child like threats. Kimberly wants his platform, so be it. Be prepared for a comedic roasting about his pathetic manner. Same goes to any other **** dictator who thinks they have a big cock!!

I guess the civilian population were starting to look complacent again. How much of other country's military is/are N.Korea aware of? What intelligence do they have access to? Why does the leader look inbred? Have they been taking some bad, coffee stained pages out of the Uk's royal breeding book?

Sure, if you can make it funny. But I would say that the thing with satire is that, in order to be really funny, it needs to expose something true or genuine. I don't think most people actually know enough about North Korea to be able to do that. In fact, noone knows very much about North Korea at all.

But hey, I mean, in world war 2 people used to make cartoons of Japanese people swinging in trees like monkeys and that was probably considered very funny. It wasn't really though, was it. It's kind of transparent and a bit pathetic. It made people laugh because they felt like everyone else was laughing and by laughing they were being included in a society which defined itself as superior to the Japanese, not because the joke was really worth laughing at.. assuming there even was a joke at all. If this is about comedy, where's the comedy?

He's not really making the threats.

Again, this is an example of not actually knowing enough about North Korea to be funny. We don't really know how important Kim is, politically. His family is the centre of North Korea's state ideology and he is personally head of the armed forces, but we don't know what that means. He's speculated to have personally approved certain actions taken by the regime in order to strengthen his military credentials and public image, but even that is complete speculation. Kim is, ultimately, more like a king than a dictator at this point. His role has gone through two successions, and is no longer based on any kind of actual competence or practical ability to seize control of the state or inspire personal loyalty, but merely on the accident of his birth. To what extent his titles are genuine and to what extent they're merely a convenience to legitimate the military regime is, again, completely unknown.

But if we wanna play "tee hee hee Kim Jong Un has a small willy" then fine. Just don't confuse childish reference humour for real political truth, that kind of casual substitution of narrative for reality is kind of how propaganda works and it leads to very bad places. North Korea itself is kind of testament to that.
