Now I've been a solid RPG player since I first started gaming. I've never ever liked FPS' at all. I hate guns, I find the first person view aspect of the games disorientating, and I love dialogue and character development.

And then Bioshock came along, and my sister bought it, and demanded I watch her play it. And lo, I found myself totally entranced by an FPS. I tried playing it myself, but again I was disorientated. I have issues with left and right, and it makes FPS vision weird and frustrating for me.

But there was something there. Something definitely there.

And then Fallout 3. The sister bought it, said give it a go! I did. And my god, I am hooked. All my issues seem to have dissolved, I am having no orientation issues, and I am totally addicted.

Now I find myself looking at the local game store shelves for other FPS/RPG mashups. I'm a convert!

Has this or something like this happened with you? Have you been dedicated entirely to one aspect of gaming, and then one day suddenly turned to the other side?

diversity never hurt anyone. you're being a bit too hard on yourself with the convert thing.

I'm just mostly surprised because, seriously I have never even looked at an FPS for longer then a minute before. And suddenly bam! I am all about them! I'm enjoying Fallout 3 more then any new game I've tried in recent memory.

He's strayed from the true faith! Shun the non-believer! SHUUUUUUUUUNNNN-N!
Seriously, they're just games. Finding a new kind you like is cool, but it doesn't require you to get circumcised or give up pork. Just go play and have fun.

Hah, I have that marked for buying next pay day myself. It looks fairly fabulous.

Man, I wish it did require I give up pork or something. You push in the disk and then a warning sign pops up that your pork to human ratio is too high to play an FPS today. It'd be an extra challenge!

Seeing how mowing down legions of armed henchmen single-handedly is considered rather manly, I think the appropriate warning pop-up should say, "Beef-to-human ratio too low to play FPS. More beef required."

I think FPSs usually don't offer too much variety, but playing one every now and again is still a lot of fun. In fact, I've been playing so many action-adventures of late, I think I'll dust off Republic Commando again sometime soon. ^^

If you like FPS games start at Wolfenstein then work your way up! You can see how damn easy they are now a days. Regenerating health my ass! Not to go on a rant here but I God damn hate halo for that. It sold so well so everyone tries to copy it, making all their games have god damn regenerating health. It's one thing to hate a game, but when it poisons the well and now I hate 8/10 of the FPS games coming out now a days it has a special slot for my rage.

*grumble*

Anyways, fallout 3 had a LOT better RPG elements than it did shooter elements. The Unreal Tournament series is probably my favorite FPS game, but it's a tournament shooter so you're not going to have a "story". Well 3 tried to have a story but it was bad (the story not the game).

More recently Call of Duty 4 had exemplary single player (IMO of course).

Not really my whole gaming history has been very diverse. My earliest games were puzzle games and platformers then along came Goldeneye for the N64 and I thought it was decent, fun to play anyway but then finally along came Halo and that was what cemented me as a gamer. Then I played Fable and I decided I wanted to play RPG's more then the first Saint's Row which made me a fan of the sandbox and finally I was a multicultural gamer, FPS, RPG, Puzzle, Platformer, RTS there were really no boundries for me at this point... except for sports games which I still hate to this day.

If you like RPGs and shooters I deeply recommend Mass Effect. Best game you can get with both genres.
Very, very true! And it's not a bad thing, to me it seems that more and more FPS nowadays try to put some RPG-esque element into it. Mainly through the use of leveling, stats and unlockables.

Borderlands IS Amazing... Honestly My pick for GOTY (Probably)...
EDIT: I've put over ten hours into it... I Can't speak better of it (a friend is going to get a 360 because of it and Brutal Legend)...

No, and it hasn't happened to you either. As an example, I'll use myself. I'm an RPG man, with a secondary interest in strategy games. I see FPS games as minor diversions and deep inside I am not able to take them seriously. I consider the Call of Duty series the same way most people on this board view the endless line of cloned EA Sports games.

I liked Bioshock. I loved System Shock (1&2). I adored Deus Ex (and even thought Invisible War wasn't bad). I enjoyed Fallout 3.

Nothing changed. I still don't like FPS games beyond the occasional diversion and I still find them boring for the most part. I'm guessing it's the same for you. It's not that you caught the "FPS disease", you just enjoyed a new take on the genre you love (the RPG/FPS hybrid).

We are in the same boat. Loved RPG, then I tried my first FPS which is Portal. I even tried to get rid of my "Doom-Sickness" and then I'm immune to getting sickness in FPS. Now my favorite genres are FPSRPGs. It's got the fast-paced action of FPS and still retains the customizing of RPGs.

In conclusion, there's nothing wrong in liking FPS unless you put it into real practice.

I'm pretty good with most different game types, except JRPGs and I've yet to have a game come even close to converting me into a JRPG player.
