The ancient Gods of Gaming are cruel and unforgiving beasts (Cthulu has nothing on the devious MMo God).

Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with having a bit of diversity in your gaming portfolio (like a balanced diet, to have a healthy opinion on games usually requires a mixture of everything in good measure).

Stealth Games. Batman: AA changed that.
Yeah, this. For a long time I was all FPS or Action, but then I picked up Batman: Arkham Asylum and it was like "Holy crap, this is awesome."

Would Assassin's Creed be considered a stealth game? If it is then the convert started with that.

I've never liked sports and racing games. I once thought i was converted to racing with Burnout 3. But it was just the game.

I usually stick with one type of game for some time until a different one comes out and is good enough for making me want more of the same stuff.

PS: Don't call them shooters just because they are in First Person.
PS2: I'd love my sister would be the one that buys the games lol

I'm pretty good with most different game types, except JRPGs and I've yet to have a game come even close to converting me into a JRPG player.
I present you Digital Devil Saga!

I you haven't played it do it and buy the second party if you liked the first one.

Nocturne is also pretty good.

diversity never hurt anyone. you're being a bit too hard on yourself with the convert thing.
I'm just mostly surprised because, seriously I have never even looked at an FPS for longer then a minute before. And suddenly bam! I am all about them! I'm enjoying Fallout 3 more then any new game I've tried in recent memory.
Fallout 3 is a lot deeper and more immersive than a lot of first person games.

Once you go FP though its hard to go back. You're so much more involved in the game from that viewpoint.

Also,it is gratifying on a primal level to hunt and shoot the little computer men. I never get bored of it!

first person shooters are fun, no doubt about it... but you played (watched) bioshock and then played fallout 3: two amazing games. no wonder you're hooked.

I was playing WoW pretty much before, and now when i think back, I don´t know why I did. When I finally got bored of that game, I didn´t want to lay a single finger on another MMORPG (or RPG either) ever again. I was hooked on TPS games for a while actually. And then I found out about Tabula Rasa. Man, that game was awesome! yeah, it wasn´t the best MMO, but it had something that wow and any other MMO didn´t have. It was unique in its own way, and it had som flaws ofcourse, but it had more good things than bad. I really enjoyed it, and I am still very unhappy that they shut it down :( .

Oh, almost forgot, This is IMO :p

I was the same way.... raised on Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy, moved on to Diablo and Elder Scrolls, bought my XBox solely for Morrowind, but then played Halo, KOTOR, then Gears and I was hooked. I can't bring myself to play CoD because it's too realistic for my liking, but Borderlands, Mass Effect, Halo, Gears, Fallout and Bioshock were all fantastic and now I'm addicted.

Give Stalker a try, its a bit light on the RPG elements but its is a totally absorbing gameworld.

One problem could be the field of view (FOV) is wrong.

Some games do not handle wide screen very well and increase the viewable area but do not adjust the FIELD of view so it's like wearing the wrong prescription glasses.

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000937.html

I have yet to find a definitive source on proper relation between FOV and aspect ratio but this source does detail some of the problems and I can imagine how setting it wrong can make you feel nauseous.

within that link, there is a link to here:
http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=108502#108502

That seems to say for 16:9 aspect ratio (720p or 1080p) you want:
Width FOV: 0.75
Height FOV: 0.75

While 16:10 (1440x900, 1650x1050) users should use:
Width FOV: 0.84
Height FOV: 0.84

Maybe that will cure your FPS nausea?

Now I've been a solid RPG player since I first started gaming. I've never ever liked FPS' at all. I hate guns, I find the first person view aspect of the games disorientating, and I love dialogue and character development.

And then Bioshock came along, and my sister bought it, and demanded I watch her play it. And lo, I found myself totally entranced by an FPS. I tried playing it myself, but again I was disorientated. I have issues with left and right, and it makes FPS vision weird and frustrating for me.

But there was something there. Something definitely there.

And then Fallout 3. The sister bought it, said give it a go! I did. And my god, I am hooked. All my issues seem to have dissolved, I am having no orientation issues, and I am totally addicted.

Now I find myself looking at the local game store shelves for other FPS/RPG mashups. I'm a convert!

Has this or something like this happened with you? Have you been dedicated entirely to one aspect of gaming, and then one day suddenly turned to the other side?
My god playing 15 years of RPGs with a sprinkling of platformers and then I bought FEAR. Sure I had played a few PS2 shooters (which I could count on one hand and still have fingers left). Fear converted me. Bioshock was my second vaccination. And now RPGs are the sprinkles.

I never liked FPS'es because I thought I sucked at 'em cause my ass was always handed to me on Unreal Tournament public servers. Then I figured out they were all using aimbots: at a LAN party I didn't do too poorly. Now I quite enjoy playing FPS'es, especially Left 4 Dead.

That said: I still suck ASS at Counterstrike.

Yeah, I don't get why people have to stick to one kind of game. I've played everything from RPG to MMORPG, Puzzle, FPS, Survival Horror and I am thinking of getting the Ju-On "Fright Simulator" when it is out in England on the 30th. ^_^

For most of my life I've been almost exclusively a strategy game (RTS/TBS/BS) player. However, when I turned 18 and got a PayPal account, I started buying some shooters. Since then, my library has expanded to include several major shooters (including all Infinity Ward Call of Duties, BioShock and the Half-Life series), and although I still play a LOT of strategy games, I find myself blasting bad guys with my boomstick very often of late.
