Might want to finish everything your currently watching before you jump into another show :s
but,

Based on the list you provided I'd say

Welcome to the NHK! and Black Lagoon are must watch series.

I'd also recommend you watch
Spice and Wolf
Kara no Kyoukai
Baccano!
Ga-Rei -Zero-

Try Disgaea, it is ridiculous like Excel Saga. It does have ONE robot, but they arent really a main character.

Recommendation would be Elfen Lied.

For mature audiences, since it has its fair share of naked woman, violence and a combination of the both, but I like it for its supurb character building and its hectic and very nicely paced story.

Welcome to the NHK is awesome, I just finished watching it.

Gunslinger Girl is okay. Haven't finished watching it, though.

Black Lagoon is one of my favorite animes.

Haven't seen Big O for years.

ROD Read or Die. That sounds so familiar...was it on Adult Swim once? And was it a movie?

Vampire Knight's really not all that great unless you're into school romance things. Which I am not into at all. If you are then I suppose it could be worth a watch it just seems to generic for my taste.

Detroit Metal City is short, screwed up, and oddly hilarious but it takes a certain sense of humor to enjoy.

Godchild is an 8 volume manga with no anime adaptation I'm aware of but I am well hooked on it.
Descendants of Darkness is a personal favorite.

Deathnote is fabulous if you like serial killer stories. I am not aware of the episode count however as I never finished watching it due to how late at night it was aired and I just never got back to watching it.

Orphen could be worth the watch but I cannot vouch for any anime adaptation as I've only read it and I enjoy the manga.

Soul Eater, again don't know episode count but it a great series.

Jing King of Bandits is short, simple, and rather enjoyable as well.

Persona Trinity Soul. You do NOT have to play Persona 3 to understand it, it's rather obscure, short, and dark in storyline, I had someone who had never played the game watch it with me and they greatly enjoyed it.

Ouran High School Host Club. Hilarious!

I hope this helps! I'm more of a reader than a watcher.

This answer list is catering to cluster's of tropes, as in "this is similar to this."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya: People who like this seem to enjoy Lucky*Star.

Escaflowne: Try Himiko-Den (Legend of Himiko) & Fushigi Yuugi.

Slayers/Slayers next: Try Slayers Try/Revolution/Evolution-R, Dragon Half, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, Bakuretsu Hunter (Sorcerer Hunters), Eden's Bowy, Master of Mosquiton 99, Record of Lodoss War, & Gokudo: Swordsman Extrodinaire.

Excel saga: Try Photon: The Idiot Adventures, Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu (Hare + Guu), & Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (Bludgeoning Angel, & skip season 2).

Great teacher Onizuka: Try Gokusen (Skip the J-Drama, just watch the anime).

Azumanga Daioh: Try Sakigake Kuromatei Koukou (Cromartie High).

Big O: Try Batman TAS.

Hellsing Ultimate. Basically, they made a shitty anime before the manga finished. They picked it up again to actually follow the manga. However, each volume of the manga animated is an hour long and takes 6 months to produce, so you could basically go just read the manga. There is a prequel, but I will warn you, the author is a lazy fat bastard who never updates (6 month cliffhanger FML).

Trinity Blood, but again, you can just go read the novels, which reveal the utter nerdiness of the now dead author. Seriously. The translation sucks though (the FORMAL translation sucks). There will never be a 'author approved' ending. He never wrote down the 'ending'. The manga follows the later (chronologically) series.

Someone suggested reading Godchild. This is the most emo thing on the face of the earth. Wait, two of these suggestions include vampires...

Speaking of which, Vampire Knight is like the manga/anime version of Twilight except with pretty pictures, which would've improved Twilight too.

Merc 1 here

I would personal recommenced both Vampire knight and trinity blood as they are both really good 1's.

Also i would say saiyuki even tho it really does surpass your 50 episode limit.

Im not really bothered to watch hellsing ultimate as i have watched the orginal series, and i don't really care if it follows the manga because i don't read manga.
