At approximately 10:45 last night my PC was declared dead on my living room floor. Compuparamedics tried for hours to revive the computer, but as it's condition worsened, it became obvious that there was little they could do. The PC was survived by a Logictec keyboard and mouse. Exact cause of death is yet to be determined.

So yeah after another PC tragedy I am once again left without a means to play my Steam games which means I need a new computer. What I want to know is what I should get in it? It'll be built from the ground up so I'll need everything. Basically I want a solid gaming machine. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Looking to spend up to AUD$2000 (give or take, but the cheaper the better!)

Price range pleases. Quite important, then we can go from there.

Edited main post with price range. Basically I want to be able to play new games with visuals set to max.

Iam not doing a full break down of price and component.

Mobo, who cares what you get as long as it works with the other bits
CPU, Intel Core I5 or I7
Memory, DDR3 if you get I5 get 4 gig if you get I7 get 6 gig. Any mid range Ram will do the job
GPU, Wait for Fermi if you want to go uber high end or get a 58 or 59 series ATI
HD, SSD if you can really afford it others wise any uber large HD with as few platters as possible.

I would say some kind of E machine. they are easy to upgrade(but come fairly cheap and not powerful), and they have a magic way of fixing themselves

Not to put a hold on your shiny new PC but what actually went wrong with the old one? In 10 years I've only had 2 problems with PCs the PSU died on my mother-in-laws PC and the secondary HDD died on my PC.

Even if its well and truly splatted you should be able to save a few components to save yourself some money and if you can save the HDD's you should be save yourself hours of reinstalling & updating.

Its at the local computer shop getting an autopsy of sorts to figure it out. I'm hoping part will still be okay. I have had shit luck with PC's over the years.

Seems like every time there is a PC thread, someone tries to open these dried-out floodgates. IT'S LIKE I'M REALLY ON /g/.

Hey Macs are cool, I'm on a Mac right now... but you can't deny that while Macs may have many positives, compatibility is not one of them.

Edit: I had a better one for this... but this will do, since I'm technically a Mac gamer - coz I duel-boot.

Edit: dont you mean /v/, oh wait...
Remember, /g/ is Technology/MacRage/YourNeweggBuildSucks, while /v/ is just Vidja/MacRage.

As much as I hate /g/, they know their shit and can save your ass a bundle of money, OP, especially for rig-building. They're assholes, but they know their stuff pretty well.

Really? I'd probably be more likely to saw off a limb then take advice from that corner of the net... I mean... it's fun an all... but I'm not sure I'd really put my trust there.

Oh, come on. They mostly just splash a fuckload of infomation all over you. If you are smarter than an average monkey then you should make something useful out of it.
And if you want someone to give you a link where you just enter your adress, cc info and press "buy" then yeah, forums are better for that.

I'd just suggest replacing the power supply as that is the leading cause of pc deaths....

Would there be any point to getting a 5970 over the 5870 card?

i am currently running an AMD 9950 black edition processor and it is wonderful and 64 bit is the way of the future it doesn't really matter about compatibility issues i run vista ultimate on 64 bit and i have never had a problem ever

but i made a mistake with the hard drive and rather than going for a Velociraptor HDD i went for a WD black 1TB its not bad but the access time really brings me down

oh and the sapphire Radeon 4870 graphics cards run really really hot so you may want to get a water block or some better case cooling if you want one

and dust filters are for people who will maintain them so if you don't want to open the cae once a month or so to do some cleaning don't put in filters its far worse than not having them

I'm not sure. I'm behind on my Ati knowledge, just had the 5870 recommend to me. My guess it that there is probably a tiny difference in power between the two for games, and that the 5970 is much more expensive.
