I spent four and a half years living on a boat, then at the start of this year I took a sailing course and it was FUCKING AWESOME.

Do I win the thread?

I've been thinking a lot about going to join a gym.
Massive steps, I know, but right now i'm just too self-concious to do anything like it...

I had a laugh at the title of this thread, When I read "Oh No! Something New!" I thought to myself, "Oh dear God say it isn't so!!!!"

XD

Good luck with the Soccer! Back when I was a Senior in High School, I found out by accident that I was really decent at the sport even though compared to actual soccer players, I was out of shape. (I was a skinny mofo, but there's no way I can remain running for such a long period of time like that, but that's why they have practice.)

I wanted to join up, but no one told me when sign ups were. When I gave my one friend beef about it, he said it was on the announcements every morning for about 2 weeks. He sat across from me and watched as I slept through the announcements that schmuck! XD

For me though, I always wanted to learn how to sword fight. I feel it is a skill that is very unique to learn these days. I did have a friend in high school that practiced the art of several weapons and martial arts with his dad and brother, but we parted ways after I graduated and I haven't seen him since.

No need to feel self-conscious going to the gym. Everyone there will be too busy doing the same thing you are to notice you. They will teach you how to use the machines by a simple request, so any fear of being caught using a machine wrong shouldn't be much of a problem either.

Physical fitness buffs are for the most part, really friendly and supportive of those who are looking to improve their bodies and health!

At the place I work, there's a lot of media related stuff you can do. And I've only ever been interested in the radio part. But since I've already done my two blocks this year, now I need to find something else to do, so I think I may try television. I always thought it would be pretty cool to be a camera person.

Does that username come from Eisenhorn, by any chance?

OT: I keep telling myself I'm going to write a novel, but I never make it more than a few pages in before I decide it's crap and delete it. This leads to me not bothering at all, and endlessly putting it off.

Escapists! I am going to attempt to start playing Soccer. This decision was made when I decided that I'd rather do something other than running to try and be less fat than usual. Whoo! Productivity!

I enjoy playing it and I'm somewhat decent at it, at least in casual situations that is.
Yeeeah, being decent in casual situations doesn't always transfer very well. Having a kickabout in the park with your mates is one thing, but spending a full 90 minutes running backwards and forwards is something else entirely. As the man (or angel) says;

Genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in, next to soccer
You're going to need to keep fit if you want to play well. Very fit.

OT: I've been thinking about joining a gym for a long time. The side-effects of some medication I'm taking have made me really fucking fat. I just keep telling myself I can't afford it, and when I get home from work I'm always too tired (and self-conscious) to go for a run and...yeah. Excuses, basically.

Juggling on the street! I love juggling, and as I'm not really an extrovert I think it would be really interesting. Can do 3 and 4 ball tricks really easily, the 5 balls are pretty damn hard (you need to be able to keep 3 balls going in one hand as a general rule). I might go down to Galway or Cork this summer actually..

People give me weird looks when I say this as I'm the only girl and about a foot shorter than everyone in my office but I've always wanted to be a competitive fighter. I love watching Muay Thai and boxing matches. My father boxed when he was younger and it's something I've always been interested but a neck injury when I was younger cut my classes short and now I feel like I'm too bulky to start as I'd get tired too fast.

I'm thinking of joining a rowing club when I go to Uni. I hate those rowing machines but actually being on the water is kinda nice.

Plus I tried it once and turns out I'm a bit of a natural. I didn't freak out and used slow and powerful.... strokes? Is that how you'd call it? Whereas the rest of the guys didn't really seem to grasp the concept. So they put me in front of the boat hoping that the rest would take notice of my rhythm and would join in. (yay it feels good to be good at something :D)
Rowing is awesome at Uni. where are you going to do it?

for me rowing is also what I tried new. the last day of the intro week for my uni I simple tought, I'm gonna try a new sport. And it became rowing. Did it for 2 years and it was a lot of fun. Although as tomtom said, be prepared to invest a lot of time in it. I was semi active (As in the most active of the not so active competition) and was training 4-6 times a week. With races that at some point were every other weekend. And if you really are going to be active you are talking about 7+ trainings a week.

But it really is fun! Really!

It appears this thread has been necro'd... Whatever.

Anywho, I'm not that fit, but I could probably play soccer 90 minutes. My friends who actually play tell me that I could play on the school team if I really wanted to (although, I've heard that my school's team is pretty... Not good).

It depends where you play, I guess. A goalkeeper (hopefully) won't be doing very much. Defenders can often get away with hanging around at the back instead of chasing the play, something I wish the England defence had realised at the World Cup, so it isn't as tiring as being a striker. Up front or playing on the wing, you'll most likely spend the entire 90 minutes running. You'll need to be up and down the pitch constantly, following the ball, and that shit gets tiring fast.

Car design. I've always drew stuff and always thought I could come up with reasonable solutions to problems, and always thought I knew stuff that should be there. I don't, obviously. Well, not yet. That's what uni is for :D

Yes, about 2 or 3 years ago I wanted to learn to play the guitar sooo badly, so I asked my dad to buy me a guitar for christmas. And so he did.

A pink Jazzmaster. And after a few lessons I gave up.

Hmm. I could do defence. Not goalie as I just don't see myself playing goalie. But defence I could probably manage.

Writing!

After 12 years of school with English teachers saying I'm excellent at creative writing such as winning the Young Author's Award for my entire school in grade 6, having teachers stop in the hall to say I did a great job on an exam in grade 11 and 12, getting an A on my story in my first year university course, I've finally decided to write in my spare time. I always wanted to write, I just never sat down and actually did it. And so it begins.
Good sir, that is indeed most excellent. Perhaps you can share a snippet of your writing here?

No, but your avatar makes me want to boot up Morrowind.
